The Castelo dos Sonhos General Public Hospital (HGPCS), through the Humanization Commission, held the first edition of the Elderly Caregiver Course on November 10 and 11, 2025, an initiative aimed at the community with the goal of training caregivers, family members, and other interested parties to provide safer, dignified, and humanized care to the elderly.

This action is part of the hospital's community extension project, which seeks to bring knowledge beyond the hospital walls, strengthening the institutional commitment to health education and the appreciation of life.

During the two days of training, the twelve participants received theoretical and practical guidance from professionals from different areas of the multiprofessional team, covering topics such as physical and emotional aspects of aging, hygiene and comfort, food and nutrition, safe use of medications, first aid, and general care in the daily life of the elderly.

The care manager Camila Lira emphasized the importance of the course as a link between the hospital and the community.

"Our purpose is to share knowledge that transforms realities. Each participant leaves here better prepared to care and also to understand aging with sensitivity and respect. This type of action reinforces the social role of the hospital and how much humanization is part of our routine," she stated.

The participants also shared their perceptions about the experience.

For Solange Fátima de Arruda, "it was a great initiative from the hospital to carry out this training; I saw it as a great learning opportunity and believe that the hospital could promote more projects like this."

Tatiana da Conceição, a nursing student, reported that "the course brought a new perspective on caring for the elderly — a more holistic view that goes beyond techniques, valuing the human being in its entirety."

According to the general director Diego Carlis, "the Elderly Caregiver Course reinforces the hospital's commitment to education, empathy, and the appreciation of life, bringing the hospital closer to the community and expanding the reach of humanization actions."

National scenario - According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Brazilians aged 60 and over already represent 15.6% of the population, which corresponds to about 33 million people, a number that is expected to more than double by 2070. This scenario has increased the demand for qualified professionals to assist in daily living activities, accompany treatments, and provide physical and emotional support to elderly individuals with varying degrees of needs. It is estimated that more than 4 million elderly people already require some form of continuous care in the country.

Data from the Ministry of Labor and Employment indicate that the formal occupation of elderly caregiver has consistently grown in recent years, representing 5.8% of domestic work ties in 2024.

About the hospital - With 34 beds, both operational and non-operational, the Castelo dos Sonhos General Public Hospital is a regional reference for low-complexity care. The unit offers consultations, exams, surgeries, and follow-ups in seven medical specialties: General Surgery, Orthopedics and Traumatology, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, and Internal Medicine.

Belonging to the Government of Pará, the hospital has been consolidating itself as a safe haven for the local population, always focusing on social inclusion and ethical, humanized, and qualified care.
