Government of Pará delivers modernization work on Duque de Caxias Avenue in Belém
Intervention reinforces COP30 legacy with improvements in mobility, urbanism, and quality of life
The Government of Pará delivered, on the morning of this Tuesday (4), the modernization work of Duque de Caxias Avenue in Belém. The intervention reinforces the State's commitment to improving urban infrastructure, traffic safety, and the quality of life of the population, as part of another investment legacy from the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30) held in the capital of Pará.
Governor Helder Barbalho highlighted that the new structure of the road enhances mobility and encourages leisure and well-being for residents. “This is one of the most populous neighborhoods in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, and the requalification not only makes the space more beautiful but also ensures proper signage, landscaping, and public equipment for sports practice, creating a coordinated environment for vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians, whether walking, running, or riding scooters,” he stated.
Helder Barbalho emphasized that the improvements on Duque are part of a set of urban works underway in the capital. “We are talking about around 300 recovered roads in the outskirts, which have gained urban infrastructure with drainage, paving, sidewalks, curbs, and signage. This legacy strengthens leisure, tourism, and beautification of the city, but also brings dignity to the population that lived in mud or dust,” he added.
Executed by the State Secretariat of Public Works (Seop), the work included an outdoor gym, benches, trash cans, game tables, picnic areas, a pet space, new paving, LED lighting, and signage with intelligent equipment. The roundabouts were revitalized, and the medians received flower boxes, tactile paving, drainage, grass, and new seedlings. Another innovation is the installation of covered crossings, which provide shelter from sun and rain, enhancing the comfort of those moving through the area.
“Duque de Caxias has undergone a great transformation, with the recovery of the central median, revitalization of the bike lane, and creation of a walking path. It is a delivery that values the community and leaves a legacy of infrastructure, mobility, and quality of life,” highlighted the State Secretary of Public Works, Ruy Cabral.
Residents of the area celebrated the delivery. “I usually walk along Duque, which used to be dark and had no space for pedestrians; it was more focused on cyclists, and sometimes accidents happened. Now, with this new structure, it has become much better. It’s modern, with areas to sit and exercise, all geared towards health. The State Government deserves congratulations. I live right next door, so it has turned into my luxury backyard,” celebrated public servant Fernando Monteiro, 41, who was strolling through the new space with his children.
“The avenue is very beautiful, so I decided to take a walk. I live nearby, and now it will be a daily stroll. It’s great, well-landscaped, with a pleasant space. This morning time is great for exercising. I will definitely invite my friends to come along,” said freelancer Lilian Lopes, 53.
Strategic avenue for mobility and urban legacy
With a length of 2.5 kilometers and five thousand meters of roadway, Duque de Caxias Avenue is strategic for mobility in the central area of Belém, which absorbs a large part of the region's traffic. In addition to being located near the Hangar - Amazon Convention and Exhibition Center and the City Park, central hubs of COP30, the road also serves as an alternative route to Belém International Airport.
The work generated about 200 direct jobs and results from an agreement between the Government of Pará and the Federal Government, through Itaipu Binacional, with an investment of R$ 17.4 million.
