The Citizen Youth Project promotes spaces for dialogue and opportunities for youth leadership

The State Department of Justice (Seju) held lectures and educational actions on citizenship for over 300 public school students in the municipalities of Belém, Itaituba, and Santarém during the month of October. This initiative is part of the Citizen Youth Project, coordinated by Seju, to encourage youth access to public policies and rights and benefits provided by law, as well as to promote spaces for dialogue and opportunities.

During the activities, students discussed topics such as legal rights and duties, benefits of social programs like ID Jovem, and other public projects that encourage education and work, digital literacy, social debates, and participation in the formulation and oversight of public policies.

Seju social worker: Andreia Siqueira observes the interest of young people in participating in programs at schools and communities

According to Andreia Siqueira, a social worker at Seju, it was possible to observe the engagement of young people in leading projects within their schools and communities. “We noticed their willingness to participate in actions in the neighborhoods where they live, for example. We also talked about social benefits and participation in initiatives aimed at first employment and sports practice. Their feedback was very rewarding,” explains Andreia.

Information and awareness - The possibility of researching social programs on the internet was one of the most discussed topics in the meetings. “There is information that I didn’t even know until I attended this lecture. I saw young people downloading the suggested apps to learn more about the benefits presented, so it is important to have this awareness,” says Professor Wagner de Sousa from the David Salomão Mufarrej State School in Belém.

Students develop various activities under the guidance of the Citizen Youth program

Renata Ferreira, a 3rd-year student at Ulysses Guimarães School in Belém, was already familiar with ID Jovem and took the opportunity to learn more about the Student Financing Fund (Fies) and other programs for access to higher education. “Even if we already have some information, it helps a lot when there is guidance on the procedures and conditions to participate in these projects.”

The Citizen Youth Project also reinforces access to the internet as a tool for young people to discuss and promote causes such as environmental preservation, bullying prevention, combating racism, valuing regional culture, promoting diversity, and social inclusion.
