The "D Day of Mammography" will be held this Wednesday (29), offering free exams in more than 20 health units that include various hospitals and polyclinics, located in the Metropolitan Region of Belém and in the interior of Pará.

The initiative, promoted by the state government through the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), is part of actions aimed at women's health, encouraging prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer. The mobilization reinforces the importance of ongoing attention to women's health and access to screening services.

Mammography is an essential radiological imaging exam for the prevention and early detection of breast cancer, capable of identifying lesions even before they are palpable. The procedure is performed by compressing the breasts in an X-ray machine, which allows for detailed images of breast tissue to be obtained.

The exam is recommended annually for women aged 40 and over with average risk, being fundamental for early diagnosis and increasing the chances of cure.

To perform the mammography during D Day, it is necessary to present an official document with photo and CPF at one of the participating units of the action.

Mammography

The coordinator of Oncological Care at Sespa, Patrícia Martins, emphasizes the importance of performing the exam. "Mammography is an important exam for the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Women aged 40 to 74, with or without symptoms, are recommended to undergo mammography, especially those who have never had this exam or have not done it for more than two years," she explained.

Benefits of mammography

1. Early detection: mammography can detect breast cancer in its early stages when it is more treatable.

2. More effective treatment: early detection allows treatment to begin sooner, which can improve the chances of cure.

3. Reduction in the need for aggressive treatments: early detection can reduce the need for aggressive treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

4. Improvement in quality of life: early detection and effective treatment can improve the quality of life for women with breast cancer.

Treatment in Pará

Treatment is available through the Unified Health System (SUS) and may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapies, as indicated by the physician.

Access to treatment begins at the Basic Health Units of the municipalities, where the first consultation takes place. Suspected or confirmed cases follow the State Oncology Access Protocol and are referred to specialized centers.
