The State Government, through the State Secretariat of Family Agriculture (Seaf), is holding the Field Day "Sustainable Livestock in Family Agriculture" on October 21 and 22 at the São Benedito Rural Settlement Project in Itaituba, Tapajós region.

The event is an important mobilization and training initiative aimed at family farmers, with the goal of increasing engagement in the Sustainable Livestock Program of Pará. During the two days of activities, participants will have access to theoretical and practical guidance on modern and efficient cattle raising techniques, as well as information on the economic and environmental benefits of joining the program.

The Sustainable Livestock Program of Pará is a pioneering initiative in Brazil that brings together efforts from the public and private sectors to promote a new livestock industry in the State – more productive, transparent, and committed to social and environmental responsibility at all stages of the production chain.

Family farmers and small producers play a strategic role in this process. Pará has the second largest cattle herd in the country, with 26 million head (Adepará, 2025), and it is estimated that 30% of this total is in the hands of family farmers.
In many municipalities, they are the main responsible for the meat that is sold locally, as well as for the production of calves intended for rearing and fattening for consumer markets (IBGE, 2017). Additionally, 75% of the milk production in the State comes from family agriculture, reinforcing its relevance for food security.

Pará also stands out as the State with the largest buffalo herd in Brazil, with 67% of the 3,500 breeders having up to 100 animals (Adepará, 2025) – another indication of the importance of family agriculture for livestock farming in Pará.

The Field Day aims to encourage the adoption of good agricultural practices, proper pasture management, production traceability, and environmental preservation, strengthening the collective commitment to efficient and sustainable rural production.

The initiative is carried out in partnership with the Federation of Workers in Family Agriculture (Fetraf), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (Ipam).
