MIS receives the exhibition 'Cinematic Resistances' starting Thursday (23)
The initiative is from the Brazilian Cinematheque and brings 20 films to Belém about times of resistance, featuring documentaries and fictional works

The Museum of Image and Sound of Pará (MIS) will host the exhibition "Cinematic Resistances" from the Brazilian Cinematheque at the Eneida de Moraes Auditorium of the Cultural Center Palacete Faciola, on Nazaré Avenue, from October 23 to 31. The traveling project features film screenings across different regions of the country and arrives in Belém with a list of 20 films, including 13 feature films and 7 short films. This edition is dedicated to recalling times of repression and resistance, through fictional works or documentaries.
In the first edition of the traveling exhibition, held in 2023, the Brazilian Cinematheque toured the country with films depicting different historical moments and aesthetic proposals from over 120 years of history. In the current edition, the curation decided to delve into the richness of Brazilian cinema, showcasing democratic processes and resistance to authoritarian setbacks in Brazil, especially during the Brazilian military dictatorship.
All sessions of the exhibition are free, and the selected titles are rated for all ages or for ages between 10 and 16. The activities of the exhibition will begin with an opening panel on the theme of this edition on the 23rd, featuring the mediation of the director of MIS-PA, Indaiá Freire, and the presence of filmmaker Januário Guedes and Eneida Guimarães, who was politically amnestied.
The director of MIS praises the initiative for addressing a sensitive and necessary topic in the daily agenda. "It was not a good time from an economic point of view, much less social. Many people died, many people were imprisoned, and many people suffered violence of all kinds, without anyone to complain to, because they were all gagged, Justice was very gagged, the legislature was very gagged. Therefore, we need to always remember to avoid repeating it," says Freire.
The Viva Cinemateca Project from the Brazilian Cinematheque, which is part of the initiative for traveling screenings, also invests in the revitalization, restoration, and modernization of film collections. According to the Vale Cultural Institute, one of the sponsors of the initiative, the main mission of this measure is to preserve and disseminate Brazilian productions.
"The Vale Cultural Institute stands alongside the Cinematheque for understanding the importance of the house of Brazilian audiovisual production, one of the largest institutions of its kind in the world, which also preserves a portrait of our own identity. Therefore, we work together on initiatives for the sustainability and modernization of the space and for the safeguarding of its collection, especially the collection of nitrate films, of inestimable value," says Hugo Barreto, president of the Vale Cultural Institute.
The cultural heritage present in the chosen works also aids reflections on human development and social values. "The institution plays a fundamental role in the construction, conservation, and dissemination of our cultural heritage, with actions that promote human development and generate values for our entire society," says Glauco Paiva, executive manager of communication and social responsibility at Shell Brasil, another sponsor of the Cinematheque.
Regarding the expectations with the fruits of this type of exchange, he emphasizes that "together, we preserve national cinema and audiovisual works in general, which are so important for the preservation of our identity," concludes Paiva.
