Planetarium of Pará promotes observation of the Supermoon next Tuesday (7)
The event will take place starting at 7 PM, free of charge, at CCPPA, without the need for prior registration, with the gates closing at 8:30 PM.

The Science Center and Planetarium of Pará (CCPPA) will promote the observation of the Supermoon next Tuesday (7). The event will take place starting at 7 PM, free of charge, at CCPPA, without the need for prior registration, with the gates closing at 8:30 PM. This will be the first time the Supermoon occurs in 2025. During the observation, telescopes and binoculars will be available to observe the details of the Supermoon. It is emphasized that the activity will be subject to weather conditions.
A Supermoon is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs when the full moon, or the new moon, coincides with the point of closest approach of the Moon to the Earth, called perigee. "This is possible because the Moon's orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle, but rather an ellipse. Thus, there is a point where the Moon is closest to the Earth (the perigee) and a point where it is farthest away, called apogee," explains the physics technician at CCPPA, Gabriel Condurú.
According to Gabriel, when a full Supermoon occurs, it is much closer to us than when it is at apogee. This proximity makes it appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than the full moon at apogee. "However, this difference in size and brightness can be subtle and is not always easy to notice with the naked eye," he adds.

Moreover, the main consequence of Supermoons is subtle modifications in the tides. "Due to the Moon being closer, its gravitational force on the Earth is slightly greater, resulting in higher high tides and lower low tides, broadly speaking," highlights the physics technician. However, Gabriel Condurú notes that there is no scientific evidence that Supermoons cause natural disasters, such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions, for example.
Mission
The Science Center and Planetarium of Pará, linked to the Pro-Rectorate of Extension (Proex) of the State University of Pará (Uepa), celebrated its 26th anniversary on September 30. The institution operates with the mission of disseminating, promoting, and applying knowledge in sciences, through greater interaction with visitors to the space, who have access to experiments and exhibitions in the fields of Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.
Thus, the institution is configured as an important space for non-formal education, which values the principle of socializing scientific knowledge and enables access to various knowledge, with a simple and interactive language.
Visitation
CCPPA is open to the general public without the need for prior scheduling on two days: Wednesday, with free entry, from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM; and Saturday, from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM. The entry fee on Saturdays is R$ 10 for full price and R$ 5 for half price.
The Science Center and Planetarium of Pará also receives school and group visits from Tuesday to Friday, by appointment, which can be made by phone at (91) 3284-9116, email: [email protected], or in person at the Planetarium of Pará, from Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 4 PM. The space is located on the Augusto Montenegro highway, s/n, km 3, next to Mangueirinho.
