Malês

Cine Líbero Luxardo, in Belém, starts a new program this Thursday (02), with the premiere of “Malês,” a film directed by Antônio Pitanga, which portrays the story of the largest uprising of enslaved people in Brazil. In addition to the premiere, the film “Paris, Texas,” by Wim Wenders, continues to be screened for another week, and “Portrait of a Certain East” also returns to the screen of Cine Líbero.

“Malês,” a film acclaimed at various film festivals, is based on historical facts, addressing the drama of the Malê Revolt, the largest organized uprising by enslaved people in the history of Brazil. The movement mobilized the black population, both enslaved and freed, in the streets of Salvador against slavery in 1835.

Led by Muslim Africans, known as malês, the rebellion took place at the end of Ramadan, celebrated in January by Islam. After the revolt's failure, the protesters were harshly punished, and repression against black people in Brazil increased.

In the film, Antônio Pitanga plays Pacífico Licutan, one of the leaders of the uprising who emphasized the importance of the participation of different tribes and religions for the success of the revolt and the end of slavery.

Paris, Texas

Double feature and return of great successes

Directed by Wim Wenders, “Paris, Texas” is a powerful statement about self-discovery, loss, redemption, and reconciliation. Distributed in Brazil by O2 Play, the re-release celebrates the 40th anniversary of the film, considered a landmark of modern cinema.

Winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1984, the restored version of the film had its world premiere at the same festival in 2024, where Wim Wenders took the stage to present the work as part of the Cannes Classics showcase.

The story narrates the journey of Travis, who is found exhausted and without memory in a Texas desert after four years of disappearance. Gradually, he begins to recall his life and is welcomed by his brother Walt, who lives with his wife Anne. Together, they also take care of Hunter, Travis's son, who gradually reconnects with his father. As Travis and Hunter rebuild their relationship and develop a strong friendship, the man sets out to find his ex-wife, Jane.

Portrait of a Certain East

“Portrait of a Certain East” had its world premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival in the Netherlands, and it was also screened and acclaimed by specialized critics at the Rio Festival and the São Paulo International Film Festival.

The work was also among the 16 films eligible to represent Brazil in the “Best International Film” category at the 2026 Oscars, and it is an adaptation of the book by Milton Hatoum, “Report of a Certain East,” released in 1989 and winner of the Jabuti Prize for “Best Novel.”

Set in the post-war Amazon, the film portrays - in black and white - the story of two Catholic brothers, Emilie and Emir, who embark on a journey to Brazil in search of better days. During the journey, Emilie falls in love with a Muslim merchant, Omar. Emir suffers from uncontrollable jealousy and will use their religious differences to separate them.
