Works at the Bolonha Complex enhance the quality and safety of water supply in Belém and Ananindeua

Interventions will increase production and modernize systems serving nearly 1.5 million people

With investments from the government of Pará, the Pará Sanitation Company (Cosanpa) is modernizing the Bolonha Complex, which accounts for 70% of the water supply in Belém and Ananindeua, serving nearly 1.5 million people. With the concession of sanitation services in the State, Cosanpa became responsible for water production in these two municipalities, as well as in Marituba. The works will increase production and improve the quality of water delivered to the concessionaire Águas do Pará, responsible for distribution to consumers, and a partner in the execution of the services.

The president of Cosanpa, Colonel Dilson Júnior, emphasizes the impact of the actions. “We are investing to ensure better quality and greater quantity of water. Our commitment is to leave a legacy for the municipalities where Cosanpa continues to be responsible for water production and treatment,” he stressed.

Among the ongoing services are the revitalization of four filters, with the replacement of filtering material (gravel, sand, and anthracite), complete cleaning, and installation of state-of-the-art equipment. To expedite the process, the old material is removed by pumping for proper disposal, while the concrete structures undergo reinforcement.

According to Cosanpa's Operations Director, Antonio Crisóstomo, the modernization will bring direct benefits to water treatment. “The Bolonha Water Treatment Station (ETA), of large capacity, is being updated with more modern technology. The replacement of the filtering beds will ensure better quality water, as they are responsible for the final purification stage,” he explained.

The completion of the works is scheduled for November, before the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30). Similar services are also being carried out on the filters of the ETAs in the 5th sector and São Brás, which serve central neighborhoods of Belém.

Crisóstomo reminds that the structures receiving improvements are strategic in the treatment process. “After capturing water from the Guamá River, it is pumped to the Água Preta and Bolonha lakes and then to the Station. There, treatment begins with flocculators, settlers, and filters, which perform the final refinement of purification. After that, disinfection with chlorine occurs before delivery to the concessionaire,” he emphasized.

Investments from the government of Pará reinforce water production

The government of Pará is investing R$ 220 million in a package of improvements to increase the supply and quality of water in the Metropolitan Region of Belém. In addition to the Bolonha Complex, the investments include:

* Cleaning of 32 deep wells;
* Acquisition of 32 zeolite filter systems for iron removal in water;
* Cleaning of 75 water reservoirs;
* Drilling of six new wells to reinforce water security in Belém, Ananindeua, and Marituba;
* Recovery of five wells in the 10th sector, benefiting neighborhoods such as Maracangalha, Miramar, Barreiro, Conjunto Paraíso dos Pássaros, Providência, Promorar, and CDP.
