"Today my life has become lighter. Before, I spent 13 hours traveling to and from Marabá for hemodialysis. I would arrive exhausted, with no strength to be with my family. Now, with treatment in Tucuruí, I have time and energy to live with dignity," says Jonas de Sousa Pinto, 30, a motorcycle taxi driver and resident of the municipality.

Jonas is one of 60 chronic renal patients regularly attended by the Policlínica Lago de Tucuruí, a unit of the Government of Pará, managed by the Institute of Social and Environmental Health of the Amazon (ISSAA). The hemodialysis service implemented in the municipality has changed the reality of those who previously had to travel hundreds of kilometers to ensure the treatment that replaces kidney function.

Action - "Currently, the service attends to 60 chronic renal patients undergoing regular hemodialysis treatment. Before the implementation of the hemodialysis service in Tucuruí, many patients had to face long journeys to Marabá, which was the closest center, or even move to other cities to undergo Renal Replacement Therapy. This situation caused great physical, emotional, and financial strain. With the implementation of the service at the Policlínica Lago de Tucuruí, we have significantly reduced these trips, ensuring more comfort, safety, and quality of life for patients and their families," explains nephrologist Ney Junior Fernandes Barros, the technical supervisor of the sector.

The service is provided with 30 hemodialysis machines, with 28 machines in the white room and two in the yellow room. Sessions take place from Monday to Saturday, in two shifts, providing adequate coverage for regulated demand and ensuring safety for those who depend on treatment.

According to the specialist, the benefits for patients go beyond proximity. "They report improvements in physical well-being, more energy in their daily lives, reduced fatigue caused by long trips, and, most importantly, the feeling of being welcomed by the multidisciplinary team. The proximity of treatment allows them to maintain a more balanced routine, with more time for family and personal activities," reports Ney Junior.

This dimension of care is recognized by those who interact daily with the service. "The team is very dedicated. I receive constant support from nephrologists, nurses, nursing technicians, social workers, psychologists, and nutritionists. This support makes all the difference because it is not just the machine that treats, but also the care and human support," says Jonas.

With the presence of hemodialysis in Tucuruí, the Policlínica reinforces the commitment of the Government of Pará to decentralize high-complexity services and ensure access to public health with quality, welcome, and humanity.

Results - For Léia Sandim, director of the Policlínica Lago de Tucuruí, the service brings hope for life to users. "Between January and August 2025, we have already performed more than 5,533 hemodialysis sessions at the Policlínica in Tucuruí, which shows the relevance and impact of this service for the region. Each number represents a cared-for life, a welcomed family, and the guarantee that public health in Pará reaches people who need it most in a closer and more humane way. Our commitment is to continue expanding access, strengthening the quality of care, and ensuring that each patient feels assisted with dignity," concluded the manager.
