Pará records the lowest historical index in deforestation alerts in August, with a reduction of 61%
Analysis by Semas, with data from Deter/Inpe, shows that compared to August 2024, the largest decreases occurred in Itaituba (-87%), Altamira (-83%), and Portel (-78%)
Pará closed August 2025 with the lowest number of deforestation alerts ever recorded for the month since the beginning of the historical series in 2019. The technical analysis by the State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate and Sustainability (Semas), with data from the Real-Time Deforestation Detection System (Deter) of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), indicates that the area under alerts decreased from 192 square kilometers (km²) in August 2024 to 74 km² this year — a reduction of 61%. Compared to 2020, when alerts reached 824 km², the decline was even more significant: 91%.
In the 15 municipalities considered a priority for inspection and prevention actions (Altamira, Anapu, São Félix do Xingu, Pacajá, Novo Progresso, Itaituba, Portel, Senador José Porfírio, Novo Repartimento, Uruará, Rurópolis, Placas, Trairão, Jacareacanga, and Medicilândia), the reduction was 68% compared to August 2024, with highlights for Itaituba (-87%), Altamira (-83%), and Portel (-78%), which led the decline during the period.

Combating the climate crisis - According to the State government, the results reflect the strategy of combining command and control, encouraging sustainable production models, and valuing local communities. “The historic reduction in August shows that Pará is making steady progress in combating deforestation. It is proof that it is possible to align economic development and forest preservation, providing security to continue expanding our actions against the climate crisis,” stated the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho.
The State Secretary for the Environment, Climate and Sustainability, Raul Protazio Romão, emphasized that this achievement is the result of planning and integration of efforts. “This performance is the result of continuous monitoring, field presence, and the use of technology. Pará is consolidating itself as a reference in environmental policies aimed at the Amazon and reaffirms its commitment to facing climate change,” he highlighted.
In the context of the Legal Amazon, alerts also recorded the lowest level in the series: 319 km² in August. Pará's share of this total fell from 37% in 2024 to 23% in 2025, demonstrating consistent progress in reducing regional deforestation.
The data reinforces the effectiveness of the State's environmental policy and positions Pará as a protagonist in the sustainability agenda and combating deforestation in the Amazon.
