Semas carries out environmental education actions focused on the fishing agreements of the State of Pará
The actions involved the voluntary contribution of fishermen for dialogue about the importance of fishing monitoring

The State Secretariat for the Environment, Climate and Sustainability (Semas) carried out various actions involving the fishing agreements of Pará during the month of September, in the municipalities of Curralinho, Oeiras, and Monte Alegre. The meetings aimed to engage the community in discussions about the rules of the agreements and reflect on the importance of closed seasons for the reproductive cycle of shrimp and fish.
In partnership with the environmental services company Arvut, informative meetings were held from August 26 to September 1 to strengthen the Amazon shrimp fishing agreement, with leaders and communities from the municipalities of Curralinho and Oeiras. Meanwhile, the region of Monte Alegre received informative meetings from September 1 to 5 focused on the fishing agreement of the municipality, aiming to disseminate information in the communities of Aldeia, Jaburu, Mucurituba, Passagem, and Miri.

“In this strengthening campaign, we discussed with the fishermen the importance of fishing monitoring, including the recording of data from this activity, such as the size and weight of the fish and shrimp caught, annual periods, and species fished. Comparing this data throughout the year will be essential for evaluating the success of the agreement, through the analysis of the results of fishing activities in the municipalities,” emphasizes the Environmental Education coordinator of Semas, Andreia Monteiro.
The fishing agreements are participatory management instruments aimed at regulating fishing activities in the State of Pará. Based on the articulation between communities and government, these agreements aim to ensure the sustainable use of fishery resources, promote the conservation of aquatic ecosystems, and strengthen the food and economic security of riverside populations.
Rosivânia Ferreira, a resident of the Miri community, reports that “we are part of the fishing agreement of Monte Alegre, and during this week, we had intense participation from Semas in partnership with Arvut, developing various activities in the community, seeking to strengthen our fishing agreement, such as the fishing monitoring course and the delivery of a boat, so we are very grateful and would like to have more activities like this aimed at strengthening our community and our agreement.”

The actions aim to disseminate the fishing agreement in Pará, in accordance with the principles established by legislation, strengthening territorial management through environmental education.

Andreia concludes by explaining that the information was worked on through informative booklets for fishing communities and playful activities with elementary school students from schools in these localities. “We explained the history of shrimp and fish, offered games like memory and fishing. These actions brought this audience to reflect on how to contribute to ensuring that shrimp and fish do not disappear from the rivers,” reinforces Andreia.
