The Vice Governor of Pará, Hana Ghassan, accompanied on this Monday (8) the asphalt paving services in the macrodrenage work of the Nina Ribeiro Canal, in the Canudos neighborhood, in Belém. The intervention has already reached 97% completion and represents a significant advance in improving urban mobility, safety, and quality of life for the surrounding population.

“In addition to the new water, drainage, and sewage networks, the Nina Ribeiro Canal is also receiving asphalt, signage, sidewalks, and curbs. We were monitoring the progress of the works last Friday and, today, the services already involve paving. We know how much this means for the residents, and it is very good to see this evolution up close. The work is in the final stretch to be delivered to the population,” highlighted Vice Governor Hana Ghassan.

Structuring work with direct impact

The Nina Ribeiro Canal connects to the Gentil Canal, recently delivered by the State Government, and contributes to the proper drainage of rainwater, significantly reducing flooding in the area. The initiative is part of the macrodrenage of the Tucunduba Basin, directly benefiting more than 300,000 people in the capital of Pará.

The execution of the work is under the responsibility of the State Secretariat for Public Works (Seop). The first phase covers the stretch between the Gentil Canal and Dr. Américo Santa Rosa Street. Subsequently, the services will advance to Silva Rosado Street, completing the second phase of the project.

Community recognition

A resident of the area for over 40 years, the self-employed Mauro César highlighted the positive impacts of the works on the lives of residents. “We were going through a difficult situation here. At night, it was dark. There was a lot of mud, no conditions, but now we are very happy with all the good things that are happening. It's a 10, just happiness!” he stated.

Since 2019, the Government of Pará has already requalified 18 canals in Belém, with 13 considered legacies of COP 30. Just this year, the Timbó, Vileta, Leal Martins, Cipriano Santos, and Gentil canals were delivered—all integrated into the Tucunduba Basin.

These actions are part of the largest macrodrenage program in the history of Belém, which also includes interventions in the Murutucu, Tamandaré, and Una basins, reaching over 500,000 people with quality urban infrastructure and flood prevention measures, essential for the well-being of the population.
