The initiative aims to bring the population closer to scientific knowledge, especially Astronomy

The Center for Sciences and Planetarium of Pará (CCPPA) "Sebastião Sodré da Gama" will resume its monthly night sky observations this Tuesday (9), after the end of the rainiest period in the North region. This will be the first observation of the second semester of 2025. The free event will take place at CCPPA from 7 PM to 9 PM, with the gates closing at 8:30 PM, without the need for prior registration. Telescopes and binoculars will be available for observing the details of the Moon. It is emphasized that the activity will be subject to weather conditions.

On the observation day of the 9th, the Moon will be nearly full; however, there will be no loss of brightness to the point of affecting visibility. “We will observe the waning Moon, which, due to its proximity to the full Moon date (September 7), will be almost complete. Some telescopes and binoculars will be available for the public to experience using these equipment, which are often distant from the reality of the general population,” says Gabriel Condurú, a Physics technician at CCPPA.

Through the telescope, it is possible to see craters and lunar spots, with great detail

According to Gabriel, through the telescope, it is possible to “see craters and lunar spots, with great detail. For example, we can observe the ‘Sea of Tranquility’, the place where man landed on the Moon.”

According to the director of CCPPA, Professor José Roberto Silva, this is an initiative aimed at bringing the population closer to scientific knowledge, especially Astronomy. “This is a highly anticipated moment for the team of technicians and interns at CCPPA, as it is an action that brings a good audience to our Center and provides a moment of direct contact for the population with our equipment, aimed at observing the night sky,” he emphasizes.

Mission

The Center for Sciences and Planetarium of Pará, linked to the Pro-Rectorate of Extension (Proex) of the State University of Pará (Uepa), will complete 26 years of existence on September 30. The institution's mission is to popularize science for the sociocultural scientific development of the population of Pará, with the dissemination of areas such as Astronomy, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
