The Hospital Jean Bitar (HJB) in Belém has an essential space for specialized care in rheumatology by offering an Infusion Room for the treatment of various rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, among others.

The space features chairs and a multidisciplinary team composed of rheumatologists, nurses, and nursing technicians, who work together in the treatment of patients with autoimmune diseases requiring continuous medication.

Patient Antônia Tavares and her husband Francisco Tavares. She is regaining autonomy after 8 months bedridden due to a kidney problem.

Among the beneficiaries is Antônia Tavares, 37, from the city of Ponta de Pedras, on the Island of Marajó, about 100 km from the state capital, Belém. Antônia's husband, Francisco Tavares, 47, reports significant improvement after starting treatment at HJB.

“She was bedridden, having spent about eight months at home in that condition. After the diagnosis, we sought professional help and she was transferred to Jean Bitar to start treatment. Today my wife can get up by herself, walk around the house, things that were not possible before,” he emphasized, grateful for her health improvement.

Another story of overcoming is that of patient Lohane Peixoto, 26, a resident of Muaná, on the Island of Marajó, 106 km from Belém by sea. Her mother and companion, Valéria Peixoto, highlights the quality of care. “My daughter has been receiving treatment at HJB since 2017, almost nine years. Here I found the best specialists, who provide humanized care, consultations, exams, pulse therapy, and quality outpatient follow-up,” she emphasized.

Data - From January to July of this year, HJB performed 3,206 outpatient rheumatology consultations, a specialty responsible for treating rheumatological diseases.

According to rheumatologist Carolina Kahwage, many people still associate the infusion room only with the administration of intravenous medications, but the practice goes beyond that. “In this space, we administer immunobiologics and immunosuppressants, such as infliximab, tocilizumab, rituximab, abatacept, belimumab, among others. Medications can also be administered in a pulse therapy regimen.”

Alexandra do Carmo, Assistant Manager of HJB

For the Assistant Manager, Alexandra do Carmo, the infusion room at Hospital Jean Bitar is a reference in the treatment of autoimmune and chronic diseases that require intravenous therapies. The already consolidated service allows the population of Pará access to specialized care, with safety, welcome, and multidisciplinary follow-up.

“The nurse's role in this space requires specific training and qualification, essential for the correct administration of medications and the management of possible complications. Thus, the hospital reaffirms its commitment to providing qualified, safe, and humanized assistance to the Pará population that depends on these SUS services,” emphasized Alexandra do Carmo.

Service: The Hospital Jean Bitar is part of the public health network of the Government of Pará and is managed by the National Institute for Social and Human Development (INDSH), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa).
