The Vice-Governor of the State, Hana Ghassan, visited the macro-drainage work of the Nina Ribeiro Canal in the Canudos neighborhood of Belém on the afternoon of this Thursday (4). The site connects with the Gentil Canal, delivered in August of this year, resulting from investments from COP30 in the capital of Pará. The services ensure the improvement of water drainage conditions, reducing flooding and advancing the quality of life of the population.

“I have been monitoring the works of the Nina Ribeiro Canal. Next week, asphalt paving will begin so that we can complete the services and deliver it to the population. And we will continue advancing to another section. These are works that transform the quality of life of people, as they eliminate flooding. In addition, they involve drainage, sewage, water supply, channel rectification, and new urbanization as was done in the Gentil Canal,” said Vice-Governor Hana Ghassan.

The Nina Ribeiro Canal is part of the macro-drainage of the Tucunduba Basin, benefiting more than 300,000 people in Belém. The work is carried out through the State Department of Public Works (Seop).

In the section between the Gentil Canal and Dr. Américo Santa Rosa Street, the executed services have reached 90% completion. The work will extend to Silva Rosado Street, which represents the second part of the project.

Historic investments – Since 2019, the Government of Pará has invested in the requalification of 18 canals in Belém, of which 13 are considered legacies of COP30.

This year, the Government delivered the Mundurucus, Timbó, Vileta, Leal Martins, Cipriano Santos, and Gentil canals. All are part of the Tucunduba Basin.

The actions are part of the largest macro-drainage program in the history of Belém, with interventions also in the Murutucu, Tamandaré, and Una basins, benefiting more than 500,000 people with urban infrastructure and flood prevention, essential for improving the quality of life of the population.
