Hospital de Clínicas holds a "Baby Shower" for patient on hemodialysis
Team celebrates the journey of patient Syanne, who defies the statistics by having a healthy pregnancy even while undergoing chronic kidney treatment

The Gaspar Vianna Hospital of Clinics held a "Baby Shower" on this Monday (1st) for patient Syanne Suelen Silva, 27, a resident of the Mosqueiro district in Belém, who is six months pregnant. Having been in kidney treatment since she was seven years old, Syanne undergoes hemodialysis and, due to her pregnancy, needs to attend sessions from Monday to Saturday to ensure the baby's development.
The patient's journey began in childhood when she started her follow-up at the Hospital of Clinics, which was a reference in nephropediatrics at the time. During her childhood, she underwent dialysis at HC until she was transferred to Santa Casa, where she remained in outpatient dialysis during her adolescence. At the age of twelve, Syanne began to be followed by the satellite clinic Monteiro Leite, staying there until five months ago when she discovered her pregnancy and returned to the Hospital of Clinics to receive the necessary care for a high-risk pregnancy.
According to nephrologist Gabriela da Rocha, pregnancy in patients undergoing hemodialysis is extremely rare and, as a rule, is not recommended due to the elevated risks.
“The patient on hemodialysis has very low fertility, both due to the chronic kidney disease itself and the treatment. When they become pregnant, the pregnancy is high risk, which is why medical guidance usually recommends the use of contraceptives. However, in Syanne's case, the pregnancy happened, and our challenge now is to provide all the necessary care for her and the baby,” she explained.

The follow-up requires an intensive management plan, with daily dialysis sessions, frequent exams, and integration between nephrology and obstetrics. “It is a delicate clinical management that demands heightened vigilance on parameters such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, urea, and blood pressure, because any imbalance can affect both the mother and the fetus,” the doctor added.
Syanne is receiving prenatal care at Santa Casa do Pará but is expected to be transferred for obstetric follow-up at HC as early as next week. At HC, she will be monitored by the medical team that will schedule the baby's birth date.
Syanne's journey is marked by her bond with the Hospital of Clinics. Social worker Silvia Zélia Alves, who has been working for 19 years in the Renal Replacement Therapy Service (STRS), highlighted the team's affection.
“Syanne has been our patient since she was seven years old. Now, at 27 and six months pregnant, she maintains a very strong connection with us. That’s why we organized this Baby Shower, to make this moment more special. The entire team, from doctors to technicians, mobilized with a lot of affection,” she said.
For the patient, the news of her pregnancy came with fear and surprise, but the support from the team has been fundamental. “At first, I was scared because I knew the risks for me and the baby. Today, I have accepted my child and really want him to be born healthy. I am very grateful to the entire team, from the social worker to the nursing technicians, who have always treated me with care. This Baby Shower was wonderful and made me very happy,” she said, emotionally.

The event brought together family members, health professionals, and colleagues from the sector, in a gesture that reinforces the role of multiprofessional care and humanization in the Unified Health System (SUS).
Hemodialysis — The procedure is responsible for performing the function of the kidney in the patient's body, eliminating toxic substances, water, and mineral salts with the help of a machine. Naturally, the kidneys perform this role through urine, but patients with kidney failure require treatment.
Reference — The Gaspar Vianna Hospital of Clinics (HC) is a state reference in nephrology, offering free care through SUS with excellence and humanism in Pará. The reference institution has a specialized service for the treatment of kidney diseases and the urinary system, covering both outpatient and hospital care, as well as a hemodialysis center.
