During September, a month dedicated to Suicide Prevention, the Galileu State Public Hospital, in Greater Belém, reinforces actions focused on mental health, qualified listening, and welcoming as an integral part of patients' physical recovery. It is in this context that the story of Erinivaldo da Silva dos Santos shows the strength and importance of hospital assistance.

When the user suffered a serious motorcycle accident, physical pain was accompanied by feelings of fear and hopelessness. "In the first few days, I felt despair. I imagined that I wouldn't be able to return to my activities and felt powerless in the face of limitations," recalls Erinaldo, who underwent intense follow-up at the reference unit for orthopedic trauma of the Government of Pará.

But he was not alone. Since admission, the hospital team closely monitored his emotional state. For psychologist Evelyn Cunha, accidents like Erinaldo's can trigger anxiety, frustration, and even depression. "We identify behavioral signs such as isolation, irritability, or frequent crying. Our intervention focuses on qualified listening, guidance, and emotional support, involving both the patient and their family," she explains.

With each physiotherapy session or medical consultation, the patient also found attentive care for his mental health. "The first moment I was able to stand up alone, after so much effort, was emotional. I felt that all the care I received restored my confidence and hope," recalls Erinivaldo.

Action

At Galileu Hospital, care is multidisciplinary and integrated. Doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and psychologists work side by side, offering broad and humanized support. "Each professional contributes their perspective on the patient's health, promoting not only physical rehabilitation but also emotional well-being," emphasizes Evelyn.

Yellow September is a time to reinforce attention to mental health and the importance of welcoming within health institutions. "The campaign promotes active listening, reduces stigma, and reinforces the creation of safe spaces to talk about feelings and difficulties," says the psychologist.

For the hospital's executive director, Cledes Silva, the integration of physical and emotional care is strategic. "Treating orthopedic accidents goes beyond recovering movements: it means emotionally supporting each patient. Yellow September reinforces the importance of psychological care, humanization, and multidisciplinary work, which together restore hope, autonomy, and quality of life," he highlights.

Today, Erinivaldo walks confidently, resuming his activities and rediscovering his own strength. "The real care I received here transformed my life. Today I can walk, resume my routine, and face each day with confidence and hope," he concludes, remembering that recovery goes far beyond the body: it is a reconstruction of the balance between mind and movement.

Service – Galileu Hospital is a public unit located at Avenida Mário Covas, No. 2672. The institution is managed by the Institute of Health and Social of the Amazon (Isssaa), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa).
