The Military Police of Pará, the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), and the Foundation for Support and Development of Research (Fadesp) signed a technical-scientific-financial agreement on Tuesday (26), lasting five years. The agreement enables the execution of the Project "Public Security, Justice, Conflicts, and Citizenship – Project II," focusing on the development of applied research to support public policies in the area of security.

The partnership provides for quantitative and qualitative studies on crime, citizenship, social conflicts, and justice, with expected impact in three dimensions: social, economic, and environmental. The research aims to understand violence in urban and rural contexts, including topics such as illegal mining, territorial disputes, and drug trafficking in the Amazon. The goal is to guide more effective and cost-efficient actions to confront violence.

Among the main expected results are the formation of research groups recognized by CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development), the publication of scientific articles, and the presentation of results at national and international conferences.

The agreement also integrates the Graduate Program in Public Security at UFPA, offering five doctoral and ten master's positions exclusively for military police officers. This is the first doctoral course in public security in the country, consolidating Pará as a pioneering state in the training of doctors in this area.

Colonel Dilson Júnior, commander of the PM: investing in knowledge production

Efficiency - For the commander of the PM, Colonel José Dilson Júnior, the cooperation reinforces the corporation's commitment to knowledge production. "Science plays a fundamental role in strengthening public security, providing tools for more assertive decisions and more effective policies," he stated.

Professor Edson Diniz, coordinator of the Project, highlighted the importance of the initiative's uniqueness. "This is the first doctorate in public security in the country. The Military Police of Pará sets an example that can be followed by other corporations in Brazil. It is worth noting that the Military Police, since it began participating in strict sense public security training programs, has experienced, along with all public security agencies, a huge reduction in crime rates. Part of this can be evidenced by the good results published month after month in the State of Pará," said the coordinator.

The rector of UFPA, Gilmar Pereira da Silva, emphasized the strategic role of the university in training public security professionals. "We are happy to contribute to the development of the State in an essential area. This integration between the university and security forces strengthens our mission to train qualified workers to care for society," he emphasized.
