The State Department of Public Health of Pará (Sespa) received an award during the 45th Brazilian Congress of Hand Surgery, held from August 21 to 23 at Hangar – Amazon Convention Center in Belém. The Deputy Secretary of Health Policy Management, Heloísa Guimarães, represented the agency and received the plaque in recognition of the State Government's support for the implementation of a groundbreaking social action in the North region aimed at correcting congenital deformities in children.

The initiative, promoted by the Brazilian Society of Hand Surgery (SBCM) in partnership with Sespa, took place on August 16, 17, and 18 at the Integrated Center for Inclusion and Rehabilitation (CIIR) and at the Dr. Abelardo Santos Regional Hospital (HRAS). The action brought together volunteer doctors from Brazil and abroad, benefiting children with neuromuscular diseases and nervous system disorders affecting the upper limbs.

“The solidarity action strengthens the work we have already developed in the State through the Childhood Orthopedic Diseases Program, which has transformed the lives of many children. This motivates us and shows that we are on the right path. The congress represents a unique opportunity to share successful experiences and strengthen public policies in the health area,” said Heloísa Guimarães.

Unprecedented congress in the Amazon

This was the first time the SBCM congress was held in the Amazon, consolidating Belém as a hub for scientific discussion and innovation in the field of hand surgery. In addition to the technical program, the event hosted the 4th Social Action for the Correction of Children's Hand Deformities, reaffirming the Society's commitment to social responsibility and expanding access to specialized health care.

The president of SBCM, Dr. Rui Barros, highlighted the importance of the event for scientific updating in the field. “We are working intensively to offer a comprehensive program of high scientific level, with lectures, case discussions, workshops, and interactive sessions addressing current trends in the treatment of diseases and injuries of the hands and upper limbs,” he emphasized.
