Sanitary sewage system of Ver-o-Peso reaches 86% of work completed
Historic intervention modernizes sanitary infrastructure in the market area and reinforces the environmental legacy of COP30

The Government of Pará is advancing with the implementation of the first sewage collection and treatment system in the Ver-o-Peso area, which has already reached 86% completion. The project, a result of a partnership with the Federal Government through the Ministry of Cities and the Caixa Econômica Federal, will benefit residents, workers, and visitors of one of the main economic and tourist hubs of Belém and is part of the legacy of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).
“The works are on schedule and already total 2.4 kilometers of new sewage collection networks. Currently, we are working on important points in the area, such as 15 de Novembro and 13 de Maio streets, as well as Frutuoso Guimarães alley. The interventions will ensure proper sewage treatment and, consequently, better health for those who live and circulate in this very special space of Belém,” said Thaís Ribeiro, an engineer from the State Department of Public Works (Seop), responsible for the project.

This is the first time, in over 390 years of operation, that the Ver-o-Peso market receives an intervention aimed exclusively at the collection and proper treatment of sanitary sewage. The collected waste will be directed to the Una Sewage Treatment Station (ETE) in Belém.

Among the completed stages are the excavation and installation of 2.4 kilometers of piping for the sanitary sewage collection network, backfilling, and reinstallation of cobblestones. The construction fronts also cover Campos Sales, Padre Eutíquio, Ocidental and Oriental alleys of the market; Gaspar Viana street; and Boulevard Castilhos França avenue. To avoid interfering with the commercial activities of the space, the work takes place at night, between 8 PM and 5 AM.
