Regional Hospital brings childhood first aid course to schools in Santarém
The first stage of the project was conducted with 15 education professionals. Nurses provided guidance on intervention techniques in cases of choking, seizures, fainting, and falls.

About 15 professionals, including teachers and support staff from a private school in Santarém, in western Pará, participated this Tuesday (12) in the first stage of the "Childhood First Aid Course - Protecting Lives from Early On," promoted by the Dr. Waldemar Penna Regional Hospital of Lower Amazon (HRBA).
The training is an initiative of the humanization sector of the unit and was conducted by nurses Samaroni Brelaz and Gabriel Paiva. During the training, education professionals learned how to respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations, such as choking, falls, fainting, cardiac arrest, and seizures, which are common in childhood and can have serious outcomes when there is no immediate intervention.
"The main goal is to bring this training to teachers so that they are able to use these techniques if necessary. We cleared all their doubts, especially in a practical way, so that they are prepared to apply these measures at any moment," said the coordinator of the Intensive Care Units of HRBA, Samaroni Brelaz.

Physical education teacher Brenda Tayane Feitosa was one of the participants in the course and approved of the initiative. She recalled having gone through similar situations in her family environment and highlighted the importance of this learning.
"Besides being a teacher, I am a mother. So, it was very important to learn practically. These are situations we can encounter at school and even at home, and this practice helps us not to panic and know what to do. With this course, I now know how to act. This makes our students feel safer and more confident in us," she emphasized.
For the vice-principal of the Ângelus Educational Center, Dulcimara Viana, the activity was extremely important for all staff and students of the school. "It was a different training, focused on the practical part. So, we learned by doing, as if we were in a real emergency situation, which was very good. These are unpredictable moments that can happen, and we have to be prepared to respond quickly and effectively."
Lucas Law - The action is aligned with Federal Law No. 13,722/2018 (Lucas Law), which makes training in basic first aid mandatory for teachers and staff of educational and childcare institutions. The law was created in 2018 after the death of young Lucas Begalli Zamora, only 10 years old, due to asphyxiation on a school trip, highlighting the need for preparedness to deal with emergencies.

The project is developed by the Social Institute Mais Saúde, which manages the Dr. Waldemar Penna Regional Hospital of Lower Amazon, in partnership with the State Department of Public Health of Pará (Sespa).
"We are bringing this information to the community, especially to schools that work with early childhood education. We want to train teachers and everyone who is part of the school body so that they can act in case of an emergency. It is an initiative that reinforces HRBA's commitment to the entire population," explained the unit's care manager, Monica Bianca Barros.
