Galileu Hospital transforms treatment into an experience of welcome and hope

Humanization action reinforces care for men's health. In the first half of this year, the unit provided nearly a thousand urological consultations.

At the Galileu State Public Hospital (HPEG), in Greater Belém, care goes far beyond technique and technology. At this state government unit, each patient is seen as a person, with stories, fears, and dreams that deserve attention.

Throughout this week, the unit will reinforce this mission with humanization actions that bring lightness, empathy, and active listening to hospitalized patients — among them, men who, in addition to facing health challenges, carry the affection and responsibilities of fatherhood.

Fábio Nascimento Pereira, 48 years old, a bricklayer and resident of Altamira, has been hospitalized for 13 days to treat a hip problem. Among exams and procedures, he received a simple gesture, but one filled with meaning.

"It warmed my heart and gave me strength to continue. It's as if, for a few moments, the pain and longing for home gave way to hope," he said.

Carlos Henrique, 20 years old, a victim of a motorcycle accident, also felt the impact of this differentiated care. Hospitalized for 20 days, he states that small gestures made a big difference in his recovery.

"This care makes us feel remembered. It's good to know that here, we are not just another patient, but people who receive attention and respect," he said.

Humanization that is lived every day

A state reference in high-complexity orthopedics, HPEG — managed by the Amazon Social and Environmental Health Institute (ISSAA), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa) — maintains permanent projects that combine lightness and technical care. Initiatives such as Riso Galileu, Sorriso Saudável, What Matters to You, Caring for Those Who Care, Clowning, and Cine Galileu are examples of how the hospital environment can transform into a space of welcome and hope.

For Anny Segóvia, Humanization Coordinator at HPEG, each action is planned so that the patient feels remembered as a person.

"Treatment goes far beyond clinical care. We want everyone to feel welcomed, respected, and valued as a human being, not just as a medical case," she emphasizes.

The executive director, Cledes Silva, highlights that humanization is not a complement but an essential part of quality care.

"When we take care of physical and emotional health at the same time, we accelerate recovery and strengthen the bond between patient, family, and team. This is our daily purpose," he states.

Specialties

In addition to trauma, Galileu has already provided the population with 988 urological consultations. The specialty that takes care of the entire urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra), in men and women, also treats the organs of the male reproductive system, such as the prostate, urethra, penis, vas deferens, scrotum, and testicles, being one of the main references in men's care, who, culturally, are the minority in medical offices and hospitals.

The coordinator of the urology department of the unit, Gilflávio Fernandes, assures that self-care, for both men and women, is essential and can prevent serious diseases. "The Brazilian Society of Urology has been working to develop a campaign about men's health, as in many cases, they do not have the habit of taking care of their health. The goal is to disseminate information about the need to perform all preventive exams, not just the prostate exam," emphasized the doctor.

HPEG offers treatment for various urological diseases, including BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia), with modern treatments and continuous follow-ups, endoscopic resection of the prostate, percutaneous renal surgery, and laser for kidney stones.

In the unit, common symptoms among users are related to prostate hyperplasia, followed by complaints of urinary stone diseases, such as urgency to urinate, bleeding, urinary infections, and others.
