Cotijuba, an island near Belém, is a popular tourist destination known for its natural beauty, tranquil atmosphere, and rich history. The island is getting closer to having a modern and equipped police station to meet the needs of the population. The construction of the new structure is progressing rapidly and has already reached 66.45% completion, marking an important step towards strengthening public safety in the region.

The initiative of the Government of Pará is being executed with resources from the Public Security Investment Fund (Fisp), managed by the Secretariat of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), and reinforces the strengthening of security in strategic areas of the state territory. Until now, the Civil Police did not have an adequate space, and with the construction, civil police officers will be present 24 hours in the locality, along with the Military Police and the Fire Department.

With a budget of R$ 3.27 million, the new facility will benefit both residents and visitors to the island. The structure is being built on a 940 square meter plot and is expected to be delivered in the second half of 2025. The new unit will strengthen social justice and citizenship, explains the Secretary of Segup, Ualame Machado.

“With the new police station, a physical presence of security forces is established, which serves as a deterrent to criminal activities. The visibility of police officers and police infrastructure conveys a sense of safety and order. Additionally, it allows for a quicker response to emergency calls. Community-based officers can reach the scene of an incident in less time, which is vital in situations like robberies, domestic violence, and accidents,” he explained.

Structure - The new building will be equipped to provide the best service to the 8,000 inhabitants residing on the island, located 20 km from the capital of Pará, Belém. The new security facility will ensure agility in the registration of occurrences for residents and visitors, who are currently served in the Icoaraci District.

“The Cotijuba Police Station is a construction of many hands. Besides being a great achievement for the PCPA, it has always been a desire of the community, which even provided the space where the unit will operate. The police station, which will be linked to the Metropolitan Police Directorate (DPM), will systematically confront crime, providing more tranquility to the local population and to those who visit the island,” said Benassuly, the general delegate of the PCPA.

The new Cotijuba Police Station will have a reception area, public and adapted restroom, storage for cleaning materials, incident room, delegate's office, rooms for investigators, a registry office with an area for clerks and archives, as well as accommodations, a pantry, service area, male cells, and special custody.

Public Security Investment Fund - The Public Security Investment Fund (Fisp), linked to Segup, was created with the aim of raising and managing resources from the provision of services by police forces. These resources are applied to improve physical structures, re-equipment, renovations, and strategic actions of public security institutions.

In 2025, about 8 police units will receive maintenance works estimated at R$ 2.2 million. The units that have already received works this year were: Parauapebas, São Domingos do Araguaia, São Geraldo do Araguaia, Nova Timboteua, Ourilândia do Norte, Santo Antônio do Tauá, Breves, and Augusto Corrêa.
