Government of Pará strengthens support for athletes in national and international competitions

State public policy ensures greater security for athletes to dedicate themselves exclusively to preparation, without worrying about the high costs of a competition

Currently, about 900 athletes receive support from the Government of Pará, through the State Secretariat of Sports and Leisure (Seel), for participation in national and international competitions in various modalities. An athlete can make up to three support requests per year, two for national competitions and one international, and the financial aid is primarily used for expenses such as travel, registration, and accommodation.

An athlete for over 20 years, Pará's jiu-jitsu and judo fighter, Rafael Ribeiro, is one of the athletes benefiting from state support. He has already won several regional competitions, as well as Brazilian, South American, and Pan American titles, among other international championships.

“Being able to count on this support gives us the security to focus exclusively on preparation, without worrying about the high costs involved in a competition. When we have this structure guaranteed, we can fully dedicate ourselves to training. As a result, good performances come naturally, and the State of Pará gains visibility as a government that values and enhances its sports talents,” highlights athlete Rafael Ribeiro.

Pará present in national and international events

In 2024, the State guaranteed support to 1,365 athletes for national and international competitions. An investment of about R$ 4.7 million from the Government of Pará. With this resource, athletes realized the dream of competing in sports events representing Pará.

“Investing in these athletes and in sports is investing in the future of these professionals who represent our flag throughout Brazil and the world. Our commitment is to continue encouraging and valuing these athletes who proudly represent Pará,” emphasizes Cássio Andrade, head of Seel.

The mother of jiu-jitsu fighter, Ricardo Filho, better known as “Zito,” Munnyck Gomes, states that Seel's support is essential. The athlete has already won, in his category, the world and Pan American championships, in addition to being a four-time Brazilian and South American champion. In total, Ricardo has already accumulated more than 250 titles.

“We have many athletes who are capable of competing against the rest of the world, just like my son did this year by winning the World Jiu Jitsu Championship in California. An unprecedented achievement for Pará, a 17-year-old boy in the youth category, achieving this feat. In recent years, the secretariat has had a more welcoming vision towards high-performance athletes, which directly influences the performance and participation of athletes in championships,” says Munnyck Gomes.
