General Hospital of Tailândia addresses cholesterol control with dialysis patients
'Small changes in diet can make a big difference in controlling this index,' highlights nutritionist Patrícia Manfredi

In reference to National Cholesterol Combat Day, celebrated this Friday (8), the General Hospital of Tailândia (HGT), in northeastern Pará, held an educational action focused on promoting health and preventing cardiovascular diseases on the morning of this Thursday (7).
The activity was conducted by the nutrition service of the hospital unit and targeted dialysis patients. The users received practical and individualized guidance on the importance of cholesterol control through healthy eating.

The activity was led by the nutritionist from the Hemodialysis Center, Patrícia Manfredi, who individually visited each treatment chair, talking with patients during dialysis. In her approach, she explained the importance of cholesterol control and the necessary dietary precautions.
“It is essential for patients on hemodialysis to understand how cholesterol directly impacts cardiovascular health, especially for those already living with kidney diseases. Small changes in diet can make a big difference in controlling these indices,” emphasized the professional.

During the action, printed sheets with practical tips and illustrations were distributed, guiding patients on how to prepare healthy and balanced meals in an accessible and understandable way.
“Our goal is to provide clear and didactic guidance, respecting each patient's reality, so they can apply habits that contribute to their quality of life in their daily routine,” concluded Patrícia.
About the campaign - High cholesterol is considered one of the main factors contributing to the development of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks. In Brazil, about 4 in 10 adults have altered cholesterol levels, according to data from the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC). Therefore, on August 8, National Cholesterol Combat Day is celebrated, aiming to raise awareness among the population about the risks and promote healthier lifestyle habits.

Patient Wanderley Meira, 46 years old, has been on dialysis treatment for six years, with the last seven months being at HGT. He mentioned that he has the habit of taking care of his diet daily, avoiding as much as possible the consumption of fatty foods and excess salt.
“We know that these foods are harmful, so I try to avoid what can harm me. Additionally, the nutritionist's explanation was very good, without a doubt. She always comes during the sessions, talks to us, guides us, and clarifies doubts about our diet. Her service is very good,” he highlighted.
Check practical tips that help control cholesterol:
Avoid ultraprocessed foods, such as snacks, processed meats, fast food, and industrial products rich in trans and saturated fats.
Prefer natural and whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and cereals.
Reduce the consumption of red meats and organ meats, opting for lean meats and preparations that are baked, boiled, or grilled.
Include sources of good fats in your diet, such as olive oil, avocado, nuts, and fish rich in omega-3, like sardines and salmon.
Avoid frying and excess oil in food preparation. Prefer methods such as steaming, baking, or grilling.
Control the consumption of salt and sugar, as excess can worsen associated conditions, such as hypertension and diabetes.
Always consult a nutritionist, who can provide personalized guidance, respecting each patient's restrictions and needs.
