The municipality of Viseu, in northeastern Pará, received on the night of this Wednesday (6) the "Otávio Monteiro House of Culture" and the Municipal Public Library Professor Manoel Sousa Gonçalves, reopened after 15 years. Located in the center of the municipal seat, the building that houses the House of Culture and the Public Library was built by the state government and donated to the municipality, along with a collection of 4,000 books.

Secretary of Culture of Viseu, Adenilton Monteiro

According to the municipal secretary of Culture, Adenilton Monteiro, "this is a historic space of utmost importance for the community, which will welcome all cultural makers of our municipality, and it brings us great joy that the Cultural Foundation of Pará has embraced this project since its presentation. It guided us and indicated the paths for the realization of this dream."

Ensuring access - The president of the Cultural Foundation of Pará (FCP), Thiago Miranda, participated in the ceremony for the delivery of the spaces and highlighted the importance for the appreciation of culture in the region. "The mission of the Cultural Foundation of Pará is to promote, preserve, and disseminate cultural assets, as well as to ensure access to them. Thus, it is always very gratifying to find sensitive managers who recognize that the appreciation of culture goes beyond the production of events," he emphasized.

Thiago Miranda also highlighted the participation of FCP in the restructuring of the building and the reopening of the Municipal Library. "The Cultural Foundation was present at all stages of the House of Culture's construction, and naturally, we donated the necessary collection for the reopening of the city's Library," he informed.

Heritage - For Viseu, the Government of Pará donated, through FCP, 5,000 books by Pará writers published by the State. Part of them was allocated to the Library, and the others to other spaces that promote reading in the municipality.

Professor and historian, Raimundo Gonçalves participated in the delivery of the House of Culture and emphasized the importance of the reopening of the Library. According to him, "the Public Library is a heritage for the municipality, but especially for those who live in Viseu, for students and teachers. The Library is a place of contact with authors from the Amazon, with literary works, and this is important to encourage intellectuality and the formation of readers."

Encouragement for reading - In addition to the Public Library, eight schools and the quilombola community João Grande received books to expand their collections. "The delivery is part of the Reading Program throughout Pará, an initiative of the state government that, only in 2024, distributed more than 43,000 books in all regions. The main objective is to promote reading and appreciate regional literature," said Marinilde Barbosa, director of Reading and Information at the Cultural Foundation of Pará.

The House of Culture brings together, in addition to the Municipal Public Library, a gallery for exhibitions, an auditorium, a space for workshops, and a museum room that preserves the history of the formation of the municipality.

Starting this Thursday (7), the space will be open to the public from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 12 pm, and from 1 pm to 5 pm.
