Adepará highlights final deadline for mandatory rabies vaccination in 50 municipalities

The Agricultural Defense Agency notes that, in addition to vaccinating, producers need to prove the vaccination of their herds

The deadline for vaccinating animals against rabies ends next Thursday, July 31, in the 50 municipalities of the northeastern region of Pará, where immunization is mandatory. The focus of Adepará's campaign is on production animals, that is, those raised with the aim of generating products or by-products for human consumption or use in other activities.

Adepará notes that, with a week left until the end of the campaign, rural producers can still purchase the vaccine at registered agricultural supply stores. Producers must prove the vaccination of the animals by August 15 at an Agency unit in their municipality.

The deadline is already extended, and according to Adepará, it will not be extended further. “In addition to vaccinating, it is necessary to prove that the animals have been vaccinated, and this is done by presenting the invoice for the purchase of the rabies vaccine and the description of the vaccinated herd,” explains state agricultural inspector, veterinarian Khrisna Tabosa.

Rural producers must vaccinate animals against rabies, a disease primarily transmitted by hematophagous bats (vampire bats), which has no cure. Vaccination of animals is the main method of disease prevention.

In the campaign, Adepará advises that in addition to cattle, buffaloes, as well as goats, sheep, and equines should also be vaccinated.

Proof of vaccination is required for the issuance of the Animal Transit Guide (GTA)

The Animal Transit Guide (GTA) is the document that authorizes the movement of herds throughout Pará. Only animals vaccinated against rabies will be allowed to circulate through the existing agricultural barriers in the state.

Immunization against animal rabies was established by ordinance No. 8272/2021 in 50 municipalities under the jurisdiction of the regional offices of Abaetetuba, Castanhal, Capanema, and Capitão Poço. The regulation establishes annual vaccination against rabies under the responsibility of animal owners.

Population control of bats

In addition to vaccinating animals, the Agency also conducts population control of bats through registration and monitoring of shelters, as well as capturing these mammals.

Bats are mammals that help preserve ecosystems and are protected by Federal Law 9,605/98 (Environmental Law). Depending on the ecosystem, they promote the pollination of flowers and the dispersal of seeds from various plants.

Adepará reports that bats are important animals in the recovery of deforested areas, but if they are infected, especially those of the species Desmodus rotundus (vampire bat), they can transmit rabies. To prevent the disease, the population should keep domestic animals (dogs and cats) vaccinated (annually) against rabies, as well as production animals except for birds.
