Government of Pará expands heart surgeries at Gaspar Vianna Clinical Hospital
Reference unit in high complexity performs 600 procedures in the first semester and reinforces its strategic role in state cardiology

"My follow-up is 10." The phrase is from Paulo Roberto Fernandes, 78 years old. He underwent a surgical procedure at Gaspar Vianna Clinical Hospital to unblock coronary arteries. The Clinical Hospital is a reference in cardiology in Pará. The unit is prepared for complex heart surgeries in children, adults, and the elderly, especially those involving congenital heart diseases, as well as artificial cardiac stimulation, aortic aneurysms, and myocardial revascularization.
In the first semester of this year, 600 surgeries were performed on adults, a number higher than that performed in the same period of 2024, with 571 procedures. The number of catheterizations and pacemakers also increased in the first semester, from 811 to 982.

Patient Paulo Fernandes acknowledges the dedication of the Clinical Hospital team. "The professionals work with satisfaction, and that makes us happy and secure, thanks to excellent communication and care. This, for me, is a great differential in undergoing the procedure and trusting the care for full recovery."
Paulo Roberto needed to treat the blockage of the coronary arteries to avoid chest pain and a heart attack. He received the diagnosis of blockage and underwent tests at the Metropolitan Polyclinic in Belém.

The unit is prepared for high complexity surgeries
Maurício Fortuna, head of cardiac surgery, explains that the public policy of expanding access to cardiological consultations and exams, promoted by the State Government, drives new fronts of specialized outpatient care, increases the number of diagnoses, and consequently, a greater need for surgeries.
"We have witnessed an increase in the life expectancy of the population, which, combined with new concepts and technologies in health, has allowed for the indication of treatments in critical situations, with the expectation of good results. Our service has consolidated a level of care, in my view, full. For example, once diagnosed with a myocardial infarction in the clinical emergency, the patient receives immediate treatment, with state-of-the-art equipment and machines, as well as a multidisciplinary hospital rehabilitation, discharge, and follow-up in the outpatient setting," assures Maurício Fortuna.
The head of cardiac surgery also points out that, in the last seven years, there has been an increase in technological resources and human resources at the Clinical Hospital. "Regarding technological resources, investments in internal infrastructure stand out, with the reconstruction of the electrical network, cooling network, increase in the number of beds, acquisition of state-of-the-art catheterization machines, CT scanners, integrated computing systems in the management of hospitalizations and exams, as well as monitors and other equipment in the Intensive Care Unit," he highlights.
