In Ananindeua, the construction of the viaduct at Mário Covas and Independência enters the final stretch
Another state investment in mobility in the Metropolitan Region, the work advances with earthworks, paving, and drainage services
More than 80% of the construction work on the viaduct at the confluence of Mário Covas and Independência avenues in Ananindeua, a municipality in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, has already been completed. The facility, which is part of the structural investments driven by COP 30 (the global conference on climate change), will be essential for speeding up urban mobility safely for the population. This is the fifth viaduct built by the Government of Pará. When the work is completed, it will benefit more than 30,000 people who pass through the area daily.
Businesswoman Juliana Pinheiro, who has been selling regional food near the intersection of the two avenues for seven years, eagerly awaits the completion of the work, which will facilitate movement and have direct effects for local merchants.
“Especially during peak hours, those passing through here faced a lot of traffic jams. Many customers sought alternative routes to avoid the area, and as a result, we lost sales. With the improved flow, certainly more customers will pass through the road and have the opportunity to know our products,” emphasizes Juliana.
Final stage - Currently, earthworks, paving, and drainage services are underway, according to Emanuele Gaia, the engineering supervisor of the Metropolitan Transport Management Center (NGTM), responsible for the construction of the viaduct. “We are already moving towards the final stage of the work, regarding the structure of the deck, for example, which is the part of the viaduct itself. We will begin, next week, the signaling, lighting, and paving phase. This viaduct comes to promote more mobility and fluidity, with the removal of traffic lights. Thousands of people will benefit,” assures the professional.
With two-way traffic, the viaduct will be 350 meters long and 14 meters wide. Vehicles on Avenida Independência will be able to pass under the structure.
Quality of life - The Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Logistics, Adler Silveira, emphasizes the importance of the viaduct. "This new facility will ensure more mobility in commuting, improving the quality of life for the population of the Metropolitan Region of Belém. Thus, people will spend less time in traffic and gain more time in their daily lives," emphasizes the head of Seinfra.
Three other viaducts have been built on BR-316 highway as part of the works for COP 30: one at the intersection with Avenida Independência and another at the access to PA-483 highway (Alça Viária) in Marituba, and at the intersection of Mário Covas and Três Corações avenues. The viaduct built on BR-316, which provides access to Avenida Ananin, was delivered in 2023, benefiting thousands of users of the road and residents of Ananindeua and other municipalities in the Metropolitan Region.
Expectation - Toni Pinheiro, manager of a store on Avenida Independência, has been commuting through the road daily for three years. “The traffic was very intense, and some strategy was needed to alleviate it. We have already lost customers due to the complicated access. With the completion of the work, the expectation for the new reality is high. A freer flow will influence our quality of life. Without traffic, it would take me 10 minutes from my home to work. But currently, it takes at least 30 minutes. This time will be reduced and will improve the lives of those passing through here,” says the merchant.
Since the beginning of the work in 2024, about 180 workers have already been involved, directly and indirectly, in the construction of the fifth viaduct. One of these professionals, bricklayer Altair José, a resident of the Tenoné neighborhood in Belém, assures that “the experience has been very good. We closely monitor the work of each of the employees, all giving their best to ensure quality, so that the population can transit on the new viaduct and the road with more tranquility and speed.”
