The Cultural Foundation of Pará promotes the workshop "Some Moderns in the Amazon," with artist and curator Tadeu Lobato. Registration is free and can be done via a link online (see more below). With 20 spots and a workload of 20 hours, classes will be held from July 21 to 25, from 2 PM to 6 PM, at the Casa das Artes in Belém. Participants with at least 90% attendance will receive a certificate of participation.

With the proposal to critically reflect on the modern movement in the Amazon region, focusing on the city of Belém, the workshop will address Modernism from a reading situated in the time and space of the Northern region, especially in Belém. The intention is to present and discuss what the "modern" meant in this context, considering its first moments of aesthetic and symbolic formation in the capital of Pará.

Tadeu Lobato is a visual artist with over five decades of experience, and a career as a curator and cultural technician

Tadeu Lobato is a visual artist with over five decades of experience. With a solid career as a curator and cultural technician, he has held prominent positions, such as director of the Museum of the State of Pará (MEP) and curator of the Museum of Art of Belém (MAB). Currently, he works as an independent curator, conducting workshops and courses.

Lobato's artistic production navigates between fragmented visualities and tensions between artistic and institutional models. He explains that his works "build kaleidoscopic and timeless narratives, with which time reveals itself as circular and originality gives way to a singular aesthetic, marked by displacements, retreats, and continuous unfinishedness," he states.

The target audience for the workshop includes artists, teachers, art students and related fields, researchers, curators, and cultural producers, aged 18 and over. The proposal addresses the Amazon not as an exotic or distant place, but as a complex space of visualities and its own subjectivities. From the idea of "colorless cloud-land," the course invites participants to perceive this symbolic landscape as an atmosphere in constant movement and transformation.

Modernist artists in the Amazon

The productions of fundamental artists for the history of modern art in the region will be discussed, such as Geraldo Corrêa, Rui Meira, José Moraes Rego, Paolo Ricci, and Waldir Sarubbi, whose works reveal different approaches and distances from the paradigms of Western modern art.
