PCT Guamá implements Solid Waste Management Program
Focusing on sustainability and innovation, the initiative aims to propose solutions based on the experiences of the laboratories and startups at the Science and Technology Park

The Science and Technology Park (PCT) Guamá launched the Solid Waste Management Program (PGRS), a strategic initiative aimed at promoting sustainable practices in accordance with the National Solid Waste Policy and other environmental legislation, aligned with ESG principles, an acronym for 'Environmental, Social and Governance', which corresponds to the environmental, social, and governance practices of an organization.
The program is part of the Operational Plan established between the State Government, through the State Secretariat of Science, Technology and Higher, Professional and Technological Education (Sectet), and the Guamá Foundation, a Science and Technology Institution (ICT) responsible for managing the complex.
“More than managing waste, we are fostering a new culture of environmental responsibility, innovation, and sustainable development. This initiative integrates the strategic vision of state management, which understands sustainability not as a discourse, but as a transformative practice capable of generating opportunities and protecting our natural heritage,” emphasizes Vitor Dias, head of Sectet.
The PGRS aims to structure an efficient waste management system in the Park, focusing on reducing generation, proper separation, safe storage, and correct final disposal. It also includes diagnosing the types, volumes, and points of waste generation, training residents and collaborators, implementing a structured selective collection system, and strengthening partnerships with local cooperatives for recycling. Furthermore, the program seeks to promote socio-environmental awareness among the ecosystem users.
“It is a national demand, and the Park is proactive thanks to the set of excellent laboratories we have here. The idea is that, with the technical knowledge of our laboratories and startups, we can propose solutions applicable to the city, the state, and the Amazon itself, based on practical experiences carried out in the Park,” reinforces Carlos Renato Francês, technical director of the Guamá Foundation.
The implementation of the program will be broad, participatory, and gradual, with a planned duration of eight months. Among the stages are institutional presentation, production of informative materials, hiring of a specialized company, and technical visits to engage residents. The proposal is to position PCT Guamá as a national reference in sustainable waste management in innovation environments, contributing to the advancement of sustainable practices in the field of technological development.
Waste reduction and strengthening of the circular economy
The expectation is that the initiative will significantly reduce waste generation in the Park, increase the separation and recycling rate, and stimulate a culture of sustainability among users. The formalization of partnerships with local cooperatives should also strengthen the circular economy, generating positive socioeconomic impacts in surrounding communities.
The effectiveness of the program will be monitored through meetings, technical reports, evaluation of environmental indicators, and analysis of residents' perceptions regarding the quality of the service provided. The initiative has the partnership of the startup Composta Belém, associated with PCT Guamá and specialized in environmental education and composting.
Reference in innovation in the Amazon
PCT Guamá is an initiative of the Government of Pará, through Sectet, in partnership with the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and the Federal Rural University of the Amazon (Ufra), managed by the Guamá Foundation.
PCT is the first technological park in the Northern region of Brazil and aims to stimulate applied research and innovative and sustainable entrepreneurship to improve the quality of life of the population.
Located on the banks of the Guamá River, which gives its name to the complex, PCT is situated between the campuses of the two universities and has an ecosystem rich in biodiversity, extending over 72 hectares, designated for buildings and the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of the Metropolitan Region of Belém.
The complex has more than 30 resident companies (physically installed in the Park), 40 associates (linked to the Park but not physically installed), 12 research and development laboratories for processes and products, and a technical school.
PCT Guamá is part of the National Association of Entities Promoting Innovative Enterprises (Anprotec) and the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (Iasp), and is part of the largest innovation ecosystem in the world.
