The space aims to promote comprehensive and sensitive care, valuing not only clinical treatment but also the emotional health of child patients

The Public General Hospital of Castle of Dreams (HGPCS), located in the southwest of Pará, has taken an important step in humanizing pediatric care with the inauguration of its Playroom — a playful and welcoming space designed to transform the hospital experience for the children treated by the unit.

Conceived by the Humanization Commission, in partnership with the Administrative Management, the Care Management, and the Hospital Infection Control Service (SCIH), the project was developed with sensitivity and involvement from the local community, which donated toys and items to compose the environment. More than just a decorated place, the Playroom represents a true refuge of affection and lightness amidst the hospital routine.

“The space was designed to emotionally welcome our children, offering them the possibility to play, create, and smile, even during difficult moments,” explains Diego Carlis, the hospital's general director. “Our goal is to make the hospital environment friendlier, reducing stress and contributing to the well-being of the little ones.”

The Playroom is part of the project Coloring and Playing to Smile, coordinated by the unit's Physiotherapy service. The initiative seeks comprehensive and humanized care, valuing not only clinical treatment but also the emotional health of child patients.

Research reinforces the importance of this type of initiative. A study published in the scientific journal Pediatrics demonstrated that playful and welcoming hospital environments significantly contribute to reducing anxiety and pain in hospitalized children. Furthermore, contact with toys and recreational activities can accelerate recovery and improve treatment response.

For Eduarda Lima da Silva, 26, mother of little Arthur da Silva Siqueira, 7, the new addition brought relief amidst the challenge of hospitalization. “The playroom changed the way Arthur faces the hospital. Before, he was very anxious, constantly asking when he could go home. Now, he gets distracted and has fun. Seeing my son smile even here brings me relief and gratitude,” she says. They came from the community of Novo Progresso, about 70 km from Castle of Dreams.

In addition to the direct benefits to children and families, the initiative reinforces HGPCS's commitment to the principles of the National Humanization Policy (PNH), especially in strengthening the environment as part of care — that is, creating spaces that promote welcome, bonding, and patient protagonism.

The inauguration of the Playroom reaffirms that, even in regions far from major urban centers, it is possible to provide dignified, sensitive, and quality care — where care goes beyond clinical treatment and reaches the soul.

Regional reference

With 34 beds, both operational and non-operational, the Public General Hospital of Castle of Dreams is a regional reference in low-complexity care. The unit offers consultations, exams, surgeries, and follow-ups in seven medical specialties: General Surgery, Orthopedics and Traumatology, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, and Internal Medicine.

Belonging to the Government of Pará, the hospital has been consolidating itself as a safe haven for the local population, always focusing on social inclusion and ethical, humanized, and qualified care.
