The Pará Center for Hemotherapy and Hematology Foundation (Hemopa) held a special blood donation campaign last Friday (14) at ten units of the state blood network, as part of the programming for World Blood Donor Day. The mobilization resulted in the collection of 954 bags, a volume sufficient to benefit up to 3,816 patients throughout the state.

The date, established by the World Health Organization (WHO), is celebrated annually on June 14 as a way to thank voluntary donors and raise awareness among the population about the importance of keeping blood stocks continuously supplied. The choice of the day honors the birth of Austrian physician and immunologist Karl Landsteiner, the discoverer of blood groups.

In Belém alone, the Coordinating Hemocenter collected 228 bags. The collection points located in the Castanheira and Metrópole shopping centers recorded 96 and 135 donations, respectively. In the interior, the hemocenters and hemonuclei also recorded significant participation from the population. Marabá accounted for 121 bags, followed by Barcarena (101), Castanhal (83), Capanema (76), Santarém (61), Redenção (33), and Tucuruí (20).

During the campaign, voluntary donors mobilized in different municipalities to reinforce stocks and encourage the act of solidarity. In Belém, user Rafaela de Sousa Pereira, 41, participated in the action for the first time. “I didn't know the date, but now I see how important it is. Many people need it, and we never know if it will be us or someone close. My mother herself waited a long time because she has a rare blood type. If everyone had more awareness, everyone would donate. Actions like this help to spread information and keep people well informed,” she highlighted.

In Castanhal, the internal campaign in honor of World Blood Donor Day was held from June 7 to 14, but the actions continued this week. On Monday (16), the Regional Hemocenter received a caravan of donors from Nova Esperança do Piriá. Over the past few days, volunteer groups from Acará, Mãe do Rio, Terra Alta, and loyal donors from the region also participated in the mobilization.

In Marabá, in addition to collecting 121 bags, the unit honored the donors with the highest number of contributions recorded over the years. Andreo Ezias, with 55 donations, and Antônio Gracimar, with 53, were recognized as examples of solidarity and commitment to the cause of voluntary donation.

In Santarém, the programming brought together loyal donors, local partners, and various activities aimed at the well-being and appreciation of volunteers. The unit received the Military Police Band, which enlivened the morning, in addition to offering beauty services, massage sessions, and other cultural attractions. The action aimed to recognize the act of solidarity and encourage continuous donation in the region.

The president of the Hemopa Foundation, Paulo Bezerra, highlighted the engagement of the population during the campaign. “Traditionally, the participation of the population is always very effective on this important day for public health regarding blood donation. In Belém and in all regions where Hemopa has collection units, this attendance has been increasing every year. This shows the commitment and solidarity of our population. We reinforce the importance of maintaining the regularity of donations to ensure stocks and safely meet the transfusion demands of the hospital network,” he emphasized.

The campaign aimed to ensure the supply of health units that depend on transfusions in cases of emergencies, surgeries, and continuous treatments. The decentralized action integrates the strategy of strengthening the state blood network, bringing the opportunity to donate to different regions of Pará.
