Hemopa emphasizes that blood donation saves lives and strengthens public health in Pará
The June Red campaign highlights real stories and invites the population to practice the simple yet precious act of donating blood
The June Red campaign from Hemopa reinforces the importance of blood donation as an act of solidarity capable of transforming destinies. The Foundation intensifies actions throughout the state blood network, including new posts, caravans, and investments in technology.
Social worker Hanáh Dias, who has always been a donor encouraged by her father, changed her perspective when she needed a transfusion after an ectopic pregnancy. “I never imagined that one day I would be on the other side, needing to receive. But when it happened, I thought: what if there was no blood available?”
Since then, Hanáh mobilizes donors with caravans in companies and institutions. “People who want to donate but don’t know how or have never been encouraged. When we organize, the process becomes easier, and the person feels they are part of something bigger.” Situations like these reflect the real impact of a stocked supply in the transfusion network.
Donations maintain the quality of life of patients
Another person who knows closely the importance of donation is Keliane de Souza Marques Carneiro, mother of Kelvy Lourant, 13 years old. For almost 12 years, he has been treated by Hemopa and directly depends on blood transfusions to maintain his quality of life.
“I am the one who accompanies him through all stages of treatment. I usually say that God comes first in his life, and then Hemopa,” says Keliane. She emphasizes that blood donation made by people from the community is essential: “This is where he gets his transfusions, and the team, from where we live, comes to donate blood for him. It’s not easy, but I embrace this cause with all my heart,” she says emotionally.
The June Red campaign is dedicated to reinforcing society's commitment to voluntary and regular blood donation. The mobilization aims to remind that the need for blood is constant in hospitals and that the act of donating saves lives every day — not just in emergencies. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness among the population about the importance of keeping supplies stocked throughout the year.
“Mobilization is based on solidarity,” says Hemopa president
The president of the Hemopa Foundation, Paulo Bezerra, reinforces that blood donation is a cause of global mobilization, based on solidarity. “Raising awareness about this gesture is essential for it to become part of people's routine,” he states.
“Donation is essential to regularly meet patients with diseases that require constant transfusion, in addition to being indispensable in emergency situations, such as accidents, and in surgical procedures,” highlighted the head of Hemopa.
Paulo Bezerra recalls that, recognizing the importance of the act of blood donation, the World Health Organization established June 14 as World Blood Donor Day — a date for celebration, gratitude, and, above all, a permanent incentive for donation.
According to the Technical Directorate (Ditec) of the Hemopa Foundation, the number of blood donations in Pará has been steadily increasing. In 2023, 54,178 bags of blood were collected. The following year, this number rose to 55,287. In 2025, just in the first quarter, Hemopa recorded more than 14.6 thousand bags collected — an increase of approximately 10% compared to the same period in 2024.
The significant growth reflects the engagement of the society in Pará and the mobilization actions of the state blood network, which intensify with the June Red campaign.
Changes in the donor profile
In 2024, Hemopa also began adopting new criteria for blood donation, aligned with the updated guidelines from the Ministry of Health. The changes brought important advances in the inclusion of new donor profiles. Among the main updates, the end of restrictions for people who traveled to areas with arbovirus circulation, such as dengue, zika, and chikungunya; the authorization for donation by non-insulin-dependent type 2 diabetics; and the reduction of deferral periods for those who underwent aesthetic procedures stand out.
Additionally, young people aged 16 and 17 can now donate blood upon presenting formal authorization from their guardians. The updates made the process more accessible and represented a significant step towards expanding the base of regular donors and strengthening blood supplies throughout the state.
Decentralization and new services strengthen the blood network in Pará
One of the main advances recorded in 2024 was the expansion of the Hemopa Foundation's infrastructure, focusing on the decentralization of hemotherapy services. Seven new transfusion agencies were inaugurated in the municipalities of Ourilândia do Norte, Bragança, Portel, Salinópolis, and Santana do Araguaia, increasing access to transfusion services in strategic regions of the state’s interior.
In Belém, two new units were opened: one at the Augusto Montenegro Emergency Room and another at the Beneficente Portuguesa Hospital. With this, the state blood network strengthened its reach and began to ensure better-stocked supplies and quicker responses to hospital demand.
Another important milestone was the expansion of the Collection Post at the Castanheira Portico, in the capital of Pará. With a strategic location in the Metropolitan Region of Belém, the unit received structural reinforcement and increased installed capacity, with an expectation of raising the number of donations by up to 20% in 2025. This measure directly contributes to supplying the local hospital network and retaining new donors.
