Scientific Police examines cargo with 790 boxes of smuggled cigarettes in Soure
During the examination, boxes of imported cigarettes from three different brands were found. It is estimated that there were 35 thousand packs of cigarettes.
The Scientific Police of Pará conducted, on the morning of this Monday (10), the examination of a cargo of smuggled cigarettes seized in the municipality of Soure, on Marajó Island. The seizure was carried out on the 5th by the 8th Battalion of the Military Police. Investigations are ongoing under the responsibility of the Civil Police Station of Soure. The operation was supported by the Public Security River Group (GFLU), responsible for transporting the forensic team to the municipality.
During the examination, 790 boxes of imported cigarettes from three different brands were identified. The estimate is that the cargo contains about 35 thousand packs of cigarettes. “An examination was conducted to ascertain the seized material for the purpose of discarding the smuggling. Samples were collected that will be sent to the laboratory for analysis. After that, the remainder of the cargo will be kept in the Custody Center,” explained forensic expert Fernando Rodrigues.
The cigarettes were located in two boats, on the opposite bank of Soure. In total, six men were arrested, one of whom is a repeat offender for the same type of crime. The cargo is valued at approximately R$ 5 million. The Civil Police is conducting investigations to identify the origin and final destination of the illegal products. “The flagrant was ratified and the inquiry is proceeding in Federal Court. After the conclusion of the examination, the material will be incinerated,” informed delegate Danilo Ribeiro, head of the police unit in Soure.
Smuggling cigarettes is a crime provided for in two articles of the Penal Code. In addition, Brazilian legislation prohibits the entry into the country of cigarettes from brands that are not marketed in the country of origin of the goods.
