CIIR brings environmental education to 700 students at Escola Bosque in Outeiro

Project encourages students to turn waste into learning and fun, focusing on sustainability and community integration

The Integrated Center for Inclusion and Rehabilitation (CIIR) brought environmental education and creativity to about 700 students from Escola Bosque, in the Outeiro district of Belém, with a special event this Friday (6), in commemoration of World Environment Day, celebrated the day before.

The activity is part of the third phase of the "Little Guardians" project, which encourages sustainable practices through educational experiences. Elementary and high school students participated in practical workshops on reusing recyclable materials that they had previously collected. The waste was transformed into musical instruments, dance props, and decorative objects, in a playful proposal that combines inclusion, art, and environmental awareness.

"The goal is to show, in practice, how to reuse waste in daily life. We started with the sponsorship of the school and a waste cooperative, then the students carried out the collection, and now we conclude with this transformation experience," explained Denise Morais, supervisor of the Art and Culture sector at CIIR and president of the Sustainability Commission.

Education that transforms

The program also included a scavenger hunt among the school classes, which mobilized hundreds of students and reinforced engagement around the theme. The director of Escola Bosque, Lucine Lisboa Ribeiro, highlighted the pedagogical impact of the action. "These activities are fundamental for the development of students' autonomy. They integrate theory and practice, which is essential for the education of our students," she evaluated.

Among the participants, Ana Valéria Silva, 17 years old, a student in the 3rd year of high school, was one of those responsible for weighing the recyclable waste during the competition.

"I found this partnership very important because our school doesn't always have visibility. The workshops help us learn more and become interested in recycling, and the scavenger hunt excited everyone!" she said.

Sustainability with concrete results

The "Little Guardians" project is the result of a collaboration between CIIR, Escola Bosque, and a recycling cooperative, with consulting from the Environmental Intelligence Service (SIA). The initiative is part of the "Blue Guardian" campaign, promoted by the National Institute for Social and Human Development (INDSH), with sustainable actions in hospitals and health units across the country.

With this ongoing work, CIIR reaffirms its role beyond clinical care, also promoting environmental education and community ties.

Since 2019, the center has maintained the Gold Seal Certification of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program from the Getúlio Vargas Foundation and has been awarded the Green Seal of the Chico Mendes Socio-Environmental Award three times.

In 2024, CIIR led the Environmental Race ranking, achieving 1st place with 168 points, ahead of Hospital do Marajó (164), Regional de Capanema (162), and other units. Each point represents concrete actions to reduce environmental impacts, such as optimizing water use, efficient waste management, and improvements in energy efficiency.

Gardens, ecological soap, and social transformation

In addition to actions in schools, CIIR also develops the "Garden with the Community" project, which encourages the creation of green spaces in degraded areas, promoting the planting of seedlings, the reuse of waste, and the encouragement of sustainable habits among residents.

Other initiatives, such as the production of ecological soaps and detergents, reuse workshops, and selective collection programs, reinforce the center's mission: to combine inclusion, health, and sustainability to transform realities.
