Starting next Monday (9), the 9th National Archives Week will begin. This year, with the theme Climate Change: Preservation and Accessibility, the Public Archive of Pará (Apep) promotes lectures and a virtual exhibition. The program is free and takes place at the Guamá/Belém Campus of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA).

The activities start at 9 am with the round table "Technologies for Preservation and Dissemination in Archives," featuring Prof. Dr. Décio Guzmán (Faculty of History and PPHIST/UFPA) and Msc. Cristian Mayko Carvalho da Costa (Pro-Rector of Planning and Institutional Development at UFPA and PhD student in Information Science - PPGCI/ICSA/UFPA). The round table will be held in the mini-auditorium of ICSA (Institute of Applied Social Sciences).

Then, from 11 am to 12 pm, Msc. Antônio Pacheco Neto (master in Social Anthropology from UFPA and specialist in Conservation and Restoration of Paper Collections from Theobaldo de Nigris School of SENAI) will give the lecture "Conservation of Paper Collections in the Amazon: Projects and Challenges," at the same location.

The director of Apep, Leonardo Torii, comments on the theme for 2025: "The goal of the event is to discuss how climate change impacts both preservation and the work of archives. We immediately remember the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, where a large part of the archives was affected by the floods. Therefore, this year's National Archives Week aims to reflect on how archives are prepared for these changes and how technologies can assist in the recovery of information, safeguarding collections, and archival dissemination."

"The round table discussing technologies will also bring up the challenges of preserving documents within the Amazon, aiming to provide concrete support on how climate, temperature, and humidity in the Amazon hinder the preservation of documents and how we can minimize all these damages," says Torii, also stating that the program is filled with many theoretical discussions but includes various practical examples.

Additionally, on Tuesday (10), the virtual exhibition "The Iconographies of the Public Archive: Art and History" will be available on the Secult website (link). The exhibition will be online until the end of June.

The theme of the 9th National Archives Week addresses the complexity and multidisciplinarity of climate change. During this opportunity, preventive strategies and advanced technologies for the protection of archives against natural disasters will be discussed.

Works – Since May, the Public Archive of Pará has been closed for maintenance works. The investment is R$ 1 million, coming from the National Aldir Blanc Policy (PNAB), executed by Secult. Among the spaces undergoing repairs are the service hall, the director's office, and the technical reserve. Visits to Apep remain suspended during the construction period.
