In Marabá, humanization action brings hope to amputee patient
The Regional Hospital of Southeast Pará promotes a meeting between a former patient and a young person in rehabilitation to strengthen self-esteem and encourage overcoming

At 23 years old, Paulo Henrique, a resident of Marabá in the Carajás region, faces the challenge of rehabilitation after having part of his leg amputated in a car accident. Hospitalized at the Regional Hospital of Southeast Pará – Dr. Geraldo Veloso (HRSP), he participated, on Tuesday (3), in a humanization action that promoted a special meeting with a former patient who also went through the same situation. The moment renewed his hope and strengthened his determination to move forward.
“After the amputation, I thought my life was over. After the meeting, I realized that I can still dream, that life goes on. Seeing a former patient with strength and willingness made me believe that I am also capable of overcoming,” Paulo reported, emotional.

Recognized as a reference in orthopedic trauma and care for serious traffic accident victims, the unit provides Paulo with a multidisciplinary team committed to his recovery. Physical therapy contributes to restoring mobility, while psychologists, social workers, and specialist doctors accompany his rehabilitation in an integrated manner, ensuring complete and humanized care.
“Participating in this action made me realize that I am not alone on this journey. The support from the team, especially in physical therapy, has been essential for me to recover not only my body but also my self-confidence. Each session is one more step towards a new life,” Paulo stated, strengthened and hopeful for the future.
The coordinator of the hospital's physical therapy service, Thaynara Mesquita, highlighted the importance of the initiative for comprehensive patient care. “We know that the emotional impact caused by amputation is profound, so in addition to physical rehabilitation, it is essential to promote welcome, active listening, and emotional strengthening. The action, also conceived by physiotherapist Fabio Fernandes, was designed to show that it is possible to overcome, adapt, and rebuild life in practice. It was a moment marked by empathy, hope, and motivation, which also inspired the entire team,” Thaynara emphasized.

The power of example
Jeferson Eragon, a former patient of the Regional Hospital in Marabá, returned to the place that marked his journey of overcoming four years ago. Like Paulo Henrique, Jeferson also faced the amputation of a leg after a serious traffic accident and went through the rehabilitation process at the same unit. Today, in addition to continuing his recovery, he stands out as a digital influencer and activist for the cause of people with disabilities, using his story to inspire and support other patients in similar situations.
“I know exactly what Paulo is feeling right now: that emptiness, the fear, the feeling that everything is over. Being here again, in the same place where I started my rehabilitation, is very symbolic. I came to show him, and anyone going through this, that it is not the end. It is a new beginning. He is not alone. Life after amputation continues and can be good, full of possibilities,” Jeferson stated.
Sharing motivational messages on social media, Jeferson works to mobilize access to prosthetics, organizes donation campaigns, and offers psychological support to new patients. He emphasizes that the biggest barrier to overcome goes beyond the physical aspect. “The biggest challenge is mental; we need to feel represented, to see someone who has gone through the same and managed to move forward. I always say: you don’t have to be what others expect of you. You can reinvent your story,” he concluded.
