Mobile Planetarium attracts the curiosity of students at the IV State Conference for Children and Youth on the Environment (CEIJMA)

The Center for Science and Planetarium of Pará (CCPPA), linked to the State University of Pará (Uepa), participates on Monday (2) and this Tuesday (3) in the IV State Conference for Children and Youth on the Environment (CEIJMA), organized by the State Government through the State Department of Education (Seduc), at the Hangar Convention and Fair Center of the Amazon in Belém.

During the event, the audience can watch dome sessions in the Mobile Planetarium and interact with experiments at a booth that brings together the four areas of the Center for Science: biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Among the materials and activities available are microscopes, slides of invertebrates, seeds dispersed by animals, oils and essences extracted from Amazonian plants, taxidermied animals, a magic card, an experiment with rings, the Tower of Hanoi, origami, and an experiment with electrolytic solutions.

According to the director of CCPPA, José Roberto Silva, participating in events like the IV CEIJMA "is an excellent opportunity to promote the extension activities of the State University of Pará (Uepa), as well as to bring the children and youth community closer to the Astronomy and Science activities carried out within the Center for Science and Planetarium of Pará."

Interns from CCPPA explain about the areas that make up the Center for Science: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

It is estimated that more than two thousand people, including students and teachers, have already attended the conference, which aims to present solutions to environmental issues, as well as strengthen ecological awareness and youth leadership.

One of the topics that has attracted the public's attention at the CCPPA booth is the dispersion of seeds by Amazonian species, such as the white-billed toucan. "This is an important bird in the Amazon fauna, which contributes to the dispersion of seeds, such as açaí, in addition to promoting the maintenance of the genetic stocks of the Amazonian flora, ensuring the richness of the region's floral biodiversity," says the head of the Biology area at CCPPA, Professor Sérgio Carvalho.

Popularization of Science

Student Pâmela Andrade visited the CCPPA booth on the morning of this Tuesday (3) and was enchanted by the scientific knowledge shared in the space. "I found the interns' explanations very good. I liked seeing the animals, like the butterfly, through the microscope, and learning about the aromas of the region, like priprioca, which is used to make perfumes. It's new knowledge for me," says Pâmela, who is in the 2nd year at Lauro Sodré Elementary and High School.

Students from various state schools have the opportunity to participate in the dome session in the Mobile Planetarium

Isabelle Favacho, a 3rd-year student at Lauro Sodré School, enjoyed learning more about insects. "I found it interesting because we ended up learning things we didn't have much idea about. I thought the explanation was good, very detailed, and we cleared our doubts. I liked learning about butterflies, how they reproduce, and also regarding their colors, which have meaning," highlights the student, mentioning the knowledge she gained about the colors of butterflies, which can be used to differentiate them from moths.

During the event, interactive sessions are being shown in the Mobile Planetarium, including the session "The Dark Side of Light," which addresses the harms of light pollution, both from the perspective of observing the night sky and from a biological aspect.

Letícia Santos is in the 2nd year at the State School of Elementary, Secondary, and Technical Education President Costa e Silva and attended a dome session for the first time: "I thought it was an incredible experience. I really loved it and will seek more knowledge about the constellations. I was enchanted."

The CCPPA will have a booth at the IV CEIJMA until 5 PM this Tuesday (3).
