Colonel Fontoura Equestrian Competition Brings Together Tradition, Technique, and Citizenship in Public Event in Belém
In its 17th edition, the event organized by the Mounted Police Regiment of the PM of Pará brings together military and civilians in competitions and activities open to the public

The "Colonel Fontoura" Mounted Police Regiment of the Military Police of Pará is holding the 17th edition of the Colonel Fontoura Equestrian Competition, one of the most traditional equestrian competitions in the state. The event, which is part of the official calendar of the corporation, will take place at the regiment's facilities, with free entry for the public. Riders from the PM, invited institutions, and representatives of civil society will participate.
More than just a sports competition, the tournament is a celebration of the values and institutional history of the Military Police, paying tribute to Colonel Fontoura, the patron of the corporation, after whom the regiment is named. The competition has been promoted as an action to value the memory of the PM and to integrate with the society of Pará.

“The Colonel Fontoura Equestrian Competition is a demonstration of the Military Police's commitment to citizenship. It is also a moment of leisure, learning, and closeness to the community — an opportunity to show that the PM goes beyond repressive work, valuing prevention and the bond with the population,” highlights the PM's commander-in-chief, Colonel Dilson Júnior.

Since its inception, the event has evolved into a space for technical and sports demonstration, bringing together riders from the Military Police, other military corporations, and also from civilian equestrian centers. Children, young people, and families are invited to watch the events, interact with the animals, and get to know the work done by the PM's cavalry up close.
This year's edition has been moved up to May due to preparations for COP30, which will be held in Belém in 2025. The new date also carries symbolism: May is the month of the Cavalry in Brazil, officially celebrated on the 10th, in honor of Marshal Manuel Luís Osório, the patron of the Cavalry Arm.
In addition to the competitions, the program includes special presentations, visits to the regiment's facilities, and moments of interaction between the public, military police officers, and the animals. The event reinforces the role of the Military Police as a promoter of citizenship, culture, and social inclusion, while also disseminating the practices and values of the corporation to the population.
