The mason Clemilton Carvalho, 44 years old, a resident of Marabá, noticed persistent signs of fatigue and weakness and decided to seek medical help. He was referred to the cardiology service at Polyclinic Carajás Miguel Chamon, which stands out in the care, diagnosis, and prevention of heart diseases.

"I felt tired even during simple daily activities. That’s when I realized I needed to take care of my health. Thanks to the care at the Polyclinic, I will undergo the requested exams to get an accurate diagnosis and start the appropriate treatment," reports Clemilton.

With modern infrastructure, a qualified team, and more than 25 medical specialties, the Polyclinic offers humanized care, benefiting 17 municipalities in the Carajás region. Under the management of the Institute of Social and Environmental Health of the Amazon (ISSAA), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), the unit expands access to specialized public health focused on excellence and efficiency for the population.

Another person who sought specialized care was Ana Meire, 50 years old, a resident of Marabá in the Carajás region. Concerned about episodes of weakness and discomfort, she sought cardiological evaluation at the unit. "We usually neglect our health until the body starts to show signs. Here I was well received, had my consultation, and left with all the exams scheduled. Now it’s time to take care of my heart and my life," she emphasizes.

Taking care of the heart is saving lives

Cardiovascular diseases continue to be one of the leading causes of death in Brazil. According to the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC), more than 400,000 people die every year due to heart problems, which represents about 1,100 deaths per day, 46 per hour, or one every 90 seconds.

In light of this scenario, the cardiology service at Polyclinic Carajás plays an important role in promoting cardiovascular health in the region. The unit offers specialized consultations and exams that assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with different heart conditions.

Cardiologist Danilo de Oliveira Lopes, who is part of the institution's team, emphasizes the importance of prevention. "Taking care of the heart is, above all, taking care of life. Many cardiovascular diseases are silent and only show signs when they are in advanced stages. Therefore, prevention, combined with early diagnosis, is essential," he explains.

Among the main problems identified in the service are hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias, and coronary diseases, among other conditions. "Symptoms such as fatigue, palpitations, shortness of breath, or dizziness should not be ignored. Our role is to investigate and provide a safe diagnosis and guide the patient on the best path to treatment, avoiding future complications," the doctor adds.

The specialist also reinforces that, in addition to genetic factors, lifestyle habits are determinants for heart health. "Sedentary lifestyle, inadequate diet, stress, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption are risk factors. Our commitment, besides treating, is also to guide and raise awareness among the population about practices that contribute to the promotion of cardiovascular health," he concludes.

Check out the cardiologist's guidelines to prevent cardiovascular diseases:

Adopt a healthy diet: Prefer natural foods, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, and avoid ultra-processed foods, excess salt, fats, and sugars;

Engage in physical activities regularly: At least 30 minutes of walking, running, cycling, or any physical activity, five times a week;

Control body weight: Excess weight overloads the heart and is associated with various diseases;

Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption: both are important risk factors for heart diseases and other complications;

Monitor blood pressure and cholesterol: Routine exams help identify and treat problems before they progress;

Manage stress and take care of mental health: practice leisure and relaxation moments, and if necessary, seek psychological support;

Keep exams and consultations up to date: prevention starts with regular medical follow-up, even without apparent symptoms.
