Governor Helder Barbalho announces the release, by Ibama, of the license for the removal of the Pedral do Lourenço
The expectation is that the work can help in the flow of 20 to 60 million tons of cargo per year, improving the logistics and economy of the region

The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho announced, this Monday (26), that the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) issued Installation License No. 1518/2025 for the start of the removal works of the Pedral do Lourenço, on the Tocantins River. The license refers to the removal work of the Navigable Route of the Tocantins River - Section 2, between Santa Teresinha do Tauiri and the Bogéa Island, with an extension of 35 km, including the installation of support, industrial and explosives storage yards.
The project is an old demand from the North region, designed to improve navigation, allowing the traffic of larger vessels and flowing the production of the region. The work, under the responsibility of DNIT, includes dredging (removal of sediments) and removal (removal of stones). The expectation is that the work can help in the flow of 20 to 60 million tons of cargo per year, improving the logistics and economy of the region.
It is important to highlight that the removal makes navigation possible. The Pedral do Lourenço is a rocky formation located between the municipalities of southeastern Pará, Marabá and Tucuruí, which impacts the navigability of the Tocantins-Araguaia basin.

Governor Helder Barbalho celebrated the issuance of the license.
"After about eight years of waiting, the environmental license for the start of the removal of the Pedral do Lourenço in the municipality of Itupiranga has finally been issued. Those who are from Pará know, those who are from the north of Brazil know how important this work is. This positions Pará so that we can guarantee the navigability of the Tocantins River all year round and ensure that, from Marabá to Barcarena, we can make the river navigable, the river logistics, boosting our economy, generating many jobs, much income, making Pará's logistics increasingly strategic for the flow of our production, but also for the flow of all the north, the flow of Brazil," explained the head of the state executive.
On the occasion, the governor also informed that in the coming days he will be in Itupiranga signing the service order to start the works.
"I want to celebrate this moment. I just spoke with Minister Renan Filho and, in the coming days, we will be together in Itupiranga, in this entire region, to sign the service order for the start of the works, to remove the stones from the Lourenção region and ensure that the river can be navigable with barges, with vessels, with production being able to use our rivers," added Helder Barbalho.
The license establishes several environmental conditions, with the implementation of plans, programs, and subprograms such as the environmental control of the works, solid waste management, air quality control, among others.
