HGT carries out awareness action on hand hygiene

The General Hospital of Tailândia (HGT) promoted, on May 21 and 22, an educational action focused on hand hygiene, in reference to the international campaign held annually during the month of May. The initiative aimed to reinforce the importance of proper hand hygiene as an essential practice for patient safety and infection prevention in the hospital environment.
The activity was coordinated by the Patient Quality and Safety Center (NQSP) and the Hospital Infection Control Service (SCIH), aligning with the proposal of the World Health Organization (WHO), which this year has the theme: “Gloves, sometimes. Hand hygiene, always.”

The actions were carried out in the auditorium of the unit, in different shifts, with interactive dynamics aimed at engaging professionals from various sectors. “One of the dynamics applied was a board game, in which participants advanced spaces as they correctly answered questions related to the theme. This activity allowed for the review of important concepts about when, how, and why to wash hands, in addition to clarifying practical doubts from the daily care of these professionals,” explained NQSP nurse, Marayza Nunes.

Another tool used was an interactive question platform, which encouraged active participation from the staff. The program also included a practical simulation of hand hygiene. In this stage, washable paint was used, allowing participants to visualize on their own hands whether the steps of the technique were being performed correctly. At the end of the dynamic, each professional left the mark of their hand on a tree-shaped panel, symbolizing the collective commitment to patient safety.

The nurse from the Hospital Infection Control Service (SCIH), Elizana Vasconcelos, emphasized that hand hygiene is a simple, low-cost practice with a high impact on infection prevention. “Hand hygiene is an essential measure in controlling infections in healthcare settings. By promoting this practice, we are directly aligned with the fifth patient safety goal of the WHO, which seeks to ensure that professionals adopt routines that prevent infections and protect both patients and care teams,” she stressed.

In addition to reinforcing the importance of hygiene as an essential measure for patient safety, the action becomes even more relevant given the high demand for care at the unit. In just the first four months of 2025, HGT performed over 97,000 services, including surgeries, hospitalizations, outpatient consultations, and exams.
Public Approval – User Adriana Mendonça, 28, who recently underwent a cholecystectomy at the unit, praised the initiative and highlighted the direct impact of care on patient safety. “Washing hands the right way makes a big difference, both for professionals and for us who are in treatment. It’s an extra care they have for us, and it makes us feel even safer here in the hospital. Knowing that they take care of this responsibly makes me congratulate the hospital for this attention,” she declared.
Service – The Public Regional Hospital of Caetés is part of the health network of the Government of Pará, being managed by the National Institute of Social and Human Development (INDSH), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa).
