Cine Líbero Luxardo will screen, starting this Thursday (22), a film exhibition in honor of Italian director Federico Fellini. The special program will continue until next Wednesday (28) and features the main films of the filmmaker.

An icon of cinema, Fellini was born on January 20, 1920, in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. He was an author and director and was known for his work in 8 1⁄2 (1963), The Road of Life (1954), and Nights of Cabiria (1957).

Fellini quickly gained international recognition with his innovative and visually stunning films, which combined realism and fantasy in unexpected ways.
The Italian director received a total of 12 Oscar nominations during his career, winning four times in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The award-winning films - and the years of the award - were 'The Road of Life' (1957), 'Nights of Cabiria' (1957), '8½' (1963), and 'Amarcord' (1974).

Additionally, Fellini was honored with an Honorary Oscar in 1993, the year of his death, in recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his contribution to the art of cinema.

Check out the films that will be showing in the Fellini Retrospective:

'The Good Life'

The film was nominated for the 1959 Oscar in the category of 'Best Original Screenplay' and also received the Silver Lion for 'Best Director' and the Golden Lion for 'Best Film' at the Venice Film Festival.

The film is set in a small town in Italy where Moraldo, Alberto, Fausto, Leopoldo, and Riccardo are five typical 'good-lifers' (vitelloni): idle young men from wealthy families who enjoy a bohemian life devoid of prospects.

'La Dolce Vita'

The film won the Oscar for 'Best Costume Design' and was nominated in the categories of 'Best Director', 'Best Original Screenplay', and 'Best Art Direction - Black and White' at the 1962 awards. It also received a Palme d'Or at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival.

Set in Rome in the early 60s, journalist Marcello (Marcello Mastroianni) lives among celebrities, the wealthy, and photographers who crowd the trendy Via Veneto.
In this world marked by appearances and existential emptiness, he attends parties, meets the most extravagant types, and discovers a new meaning for life.

'8 ½'

'Eight and a Half' won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design (in Black and White). The film was ranked seventh in the BBC's 2018 list of the 100 greatest foreign language films voted by 209 film critics from 43 countries.

About to shoot his next work, filmmaker Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) still has no idea what the film will be. Immersed in an existential crisis and pressured by the producer, his wife, his mistress, and friends, he checks into a spa and begins to mix the past with the present, fiction with reality.

'Juliet of the Spirits'

The film won a Golden Globe for 'Best Foreign Film' and was nominated for two Oscars - 'Best Costume Design' and 'Best Art Direction' - both in 1969.

In the film, Juliet (Giulietta Masina) is married to a successful professional who sees her world crumble when she discovers that her husband is having an extramarital affair. After such a shock, Juliet begins to experience contacts with spirits. The character's perception shock is masterfully transferred to the viewer, who can no longer discern what is real or imaginary in the plot.

'The Voice of the Moon'

'La voce della Luna' ('The Voice of the Moon') is the last film by the Italian director that contains his characteristic atmosphere of dream and fantasy. In the film, we meet the lunatic Salvini, who observes the world differently, always looking to find its poetic side and acting as if the moon guides him.

Double Feature of 'Manas':

After its premiere at the 81st Venice Film Festival, where it won the 'Best Direction' award, the film 'Manas' has already won 20 awards at festivals around the world. The idea for the feature emerged after a conversation between the director and the Pará singer Fafá de Belém and involved rigorous research that lasted about 10 years to be produced.

The work sensitively portrays the reality of sexual abuse experienced by women in the Marajó region of Pará. The story follows Marcielle (Jamilli Correa), a young girl of only 13 years old, immersed in an environment filled with violence and abuse with her father, Marcílio (Rômulo Braga), her mother, Danielle (Fátima Macedo), and three siblings. The film also features Dira Paes, who plays delegate Aretha.

The feature develops as Marcielle, now more experienced with life, begins to have a different perception regarding her idealizations. She understands that they are trapped in an environment marked by pain and suffering. Concerned about her younger sister and aware that the future does not hold many options for her, she decides to confront the violent machinery that governs her family and the women in her community.
