On the morning of this Thursday (22), the State Committee for Combating LGBTFobia, coordinated by the State Secretariat for Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), held a program in honor of the International Day Against LGBTIFobia, celebrated on May 17.

The program took place in the auditorium of the General Delegacy of the Civil Police "Delegada Ione Coelho", with the theme "The Challenges and Struggles in Combating LGBTFobia". The theme addressed the guarantee of rights for the LGBTQIA+ community, in addition to discussing the role of public security in maintaining rights and reinforcing the ethical and effective commitment. The program was divided into three moments during the morning, including lectures and an opening table. A total of 163 people participated in the event.

“We live in a country where, unfortunately, the LGBTQIA+ population is still a target of violence, prejudice, and exclusion in various spaces — including, and not rarely, in public spaces, which should be territories of protection and welcome. Therefore, the theme addressed in this meeting is as urgent as it is necessary, as it will traverse the challenges and struggles in combating LGBTFobia, and we in public security, who have legal responsibilities regarding order, life, and the dignity of all people — also assume an institutional and ethical commitment to police action and the effectiveness of fundamental rights,” explained the head of the Public Security Policy Directorate of Segup, delegate Ariane Melo.

Among the participants were representatives from Segup, the State Public Defender's Office (DPE), the Public Ministry of Pará, the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), the Civil Police, the Military Police, the State Secretariat for Penitentiary Administration (Seap), the Secretariat for Racial Equality and Human Rights (Seirdh), as well as members of social movements and civil society.

The first lecture, given by Rafael Ventimiglia, a psychologist and president of the Municipal Council for Public Policies and Rights of the LGBTI+ Population of Belém, addressed combating discrimination as a problem for the Brazilian state. The second lecture was conducted by delegate Adriana Norat and discussed the functioning and service of the Delegacy for Combating Discriminatory and Homophobic Crimes (DCCDH).

Lana Larrá, a member of the Committee and the Pará Network of Trans People, was one of the participants in the event. For her, the event is extremely important because the LGBTQIA+ community is a target of violence, prejudice, and exclusion in various spaces, and to ensure an inclusive and safe public space, it is necessary to create a qualified protection network. “Today we are training public security servers in the State to know how to respect diversity, how to respect the LGBTQIA+ population, and how to treat with dignity,” she concluded.
