Policlinic Carajás offers more than 25 medical specialties to the local population

The Policlínica Carajás Miguel Chamon, in Marabá, has been consolidating itself as a reference in various medical specialties in the southeastern region of Pará. One of the highlights is the endocrinology service, which provides care for hormonal and metabolic disorders, such as thyroid problems, diabetes, obesity, among others.

Neli Joana, a resident of Brejo Grande do Araguaia, was treated at Policlínica Carajás in Marabá.

Among the patients treated at the Pará government unit is Neli Joana, 56 years old, a resident of Brejo Grande do Araguaia, in the Carajás region. Referred with suspected thyroid dysfunction, she underwent medical evaluation and will undergo additional tests to confirm the diagnosis.

“I am happy to have found quality care here at the Policlínica. I was well received, and the doctor gave me all the attention I needed. It is a blessing that the State offers this service close to home. Without it, it would be much more difficult for us in the countryside to get a diagnosis and start the appropriate treatment,” Neli said.

Maria Bezerra de Lima, 78 years old, was also treated by the endocrinologist at Policlínica Carajás.

With more than 25 medical specialties, the unit promotes multidisciplinary and humanized care to about 17 municipalities in the Carajás region. With modern structure and qualified team, the Government of Pará expands access to health with excellence, efficiency, and commitment to the quality of life of the region's residents.

Another patient who found answers to her symptoms was Maria Bezerra de Lima, 78 years old, a resident of Itupiranga, in the Tucuruí lake region. “I was living with sleepiness, without energy, and thought it was stress. During the consultation, I discovered it was a thyroid problem. The team here is wonderful. I will follow all the medical recommendations,” she reported.

Essential specialty for well-being -
The endocrinologist Karen Maria Araújo, responsible for the care at the unit managed by the Institute of Social and Environmental Health of the Amazon (ISSAA) and the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), emphasizes the importance of the specialty for the overall health of patients.

“Endocrinology acts on the regulation of hormones in the human body. Many hormonal diseases do not present clear symptoms at first, as is the case with thyroid disorders. Therefore, early diagnosis is essential. Here at the Policlínica, we offer care focused on listening, clinical investigation, and continuous care,” explains the specialist.

The endocrinologist Karen Maria works at Policlínica Carajás in Marabá.

In addition to thyroid problems, such as hypothyroidism and goiter, which are quite common, the professional also monitors cases of diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and changes in cholesterol and uric acid levels. “These conditions, when neglected, can evolve into serious complications, such as cardiovascular, neurological, and renal diseases,” highlights Karen.

The doctor also emphasizes that one of the biggest challenges of the specialty is dealing with very generic initial symptoms, such as fatigue, unexplained weight gain or loss, mood changes, and insomnia. “Regular follow-up and periodic testing are essential, especially in people with risk factors, such as family history or sedentary lifestyle,” the doctor adds.

With a patient-centered approach, the Policlínica ensures regular consultations, scheduled follow-ups, and the performance of laboratory and imaging tests within the unit, which facilitates access to diagnosis and continuous treatment. For the executive director of the unit, Joabe Lopes, this model of care has made a difference in the lives of patients.

“Our commitment is to offer complete, agile, and humanized care. Having all these services concentrated in one place provides more comfort, saves time, and increases efficiency in caring for the health of the population,” said the manager.

Regulation – The services at the Policlínica are regulated by the State Regulation Center, under the responsibility of the State Department of Public Health (Sespa). To access the services, citizens must seek a Basic Health Unit in their municipality. After evaluation, the health professional will provide the necessary referral. Then, the patient must present the referral document and their personal data to the Municipal Health Department, which will register and schedule in the State Regulation System.

Coverage: The unit is equipped to serve the population of municipalities in the region, such as Bom Jesus do Tocantins, Brejo Grande do Araguaia, Canaã dos Carajás, Curionópolis, Eldorado do Carajás, Marabá, Palestina do Pará, Parauapebas, Piçarra, São Domingos do Araguaia, São Geraldo do Araguaia, and São João do Araguaia.
