The State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability of Pará (Semas), through the Environmental Education Coordination (CEAM), promoted a series of workshops aimed at strengthening the communities of the Maúba River Fishing Agreement last week.

The activities are part of the actions for the implementation of the post-fishing agreement, ratified in October 2024, which aims to benefit 1,246 people, members of more than 300 riverside families.

“Establishing future steps and defining actions in dialogue with local leaders strengthens the effectiveness of the region's fishing management and the implementation of public policies to support the riverside circular economy. The goal is to ensure circularity practices and the socioeconomic development of fishing communities,” said the Deputy Secretary of Environmental Management and Regularity of Semas, Rodolpho Zahluth Bastos.

The actions included workshops on the reuse of organic waste for the production of compost and biofertilizer, the reuse of cooking oil for making homemade soap, and cooperativism and associativism, which aim to encourage collective and solidarity practices in local communities. Semas technicians also held lectures at the Municipal Elementary School Nossa Senhora Perpetuo Socorro, aiming to discuss the Maúba River Fishing Agreement.

"The activities developed at the school aim to disseminate the agreement with the school community. It was very important to have the participation of students and teachers in this dialogue," commented the Environmental Education Coordinator of Semas, Andreia Monteiro.

A resident of the Nossa Senhora de Fátima community, Maria de Jesus, highlighted the importance of the workshops and the opportunity to share knowledge within the locality itself. "The importance of the workshop is very great because things that we used to throw away, we will now reuse. For me and for our community, it is something that we will put into practice, work within the community, and share what we learned.

Now, we will also be able to teach other mothers, fathers, and young people about these practices we received. It is something very important for all of us.”

The Maúba River Fishing Agreement is the result of direct dialogue with local communities and technical support from Semas, reinforcing the importance of sustainable activity and environmental conservation for the communities in the river's area of influence. The training sessions were supported by the Municipal Environment Secretariat of Abaetetuba (SEMMA), the Abaetetuba city hall, and leaders from the communities in the area of the Maúba River agreement.
