The Amazon Foundation for Support of Studies and Research of Pará (Fapespa), in partnership with the University of Birmingham (UoB) from the United Kingdom, launched this Thursday (15), the public call no. 004/2025 – Connect Amazônia. The initiative is part of the Engage Amazônia 2025 Program and aims to promote scientific research projects aligned with the public policies of Science, Technology, and Innovation of the Government of Pará, focusing on promoting the internationalization of research groups and institutions from Pará.

With a state investment of R$ 350,000, the call seeks to boost studies that address the environmental, social, and economic challenges of the Amazon through cooperation between researchers from Pará and the United Kingdom.

Proposals must align with strategic themes for the sustainable development of the region and will be evaluated based on criteria such as originality, scientific and technological relevance, clarity of objectives and goals, methodological consistency, and budgetary and chronological adequacy. The selection will also consider the potential impact of the projects for forming lasting partnerships between Brazilian and British institutions.

Applications are open until June 13, 2025, and must be submitted through the Fapespa platform at the address: Call no. 004/2025 - Connect Amazônia. The final result is expected to be announced on July 25, 2025, with possible changes depending on the progress of the technical analysis.

According to the scientific director of Fapespa, Deyvison Medrado, the action strengthens the policy of internationalization of science in the state. "Fapespa aims to expand the reach and quality of research developed in Pará, promoting the exchange of experiences with world-renowned institutions. This partnership with the University of Birmingham is strategic for consolidating long-term collaborative networks aimed at knowledge production and innovation in the Amazon," he emphasized.

International Cooperation

The Connect Amazônia call is one of the actions outlined in the International Cooperation Agreement for Research, Development, and Innovation (PD&I) no. 001/2025, signed between the Government of Pará, Fapespa, and the University of Birmingham. The agreement seeks to establish lasting collaborations in key areas such as climate change, deforestation, bioeconomy, nature-based solutions, and land conflicts.

The Engage Amazônia 2025 is a multidisciplinary program that aims to generate scientific results applicable to the Amazon context while strengthening the presence of Pará's academic production on the global stage.
