Pará reduces cell phone theft by 46% in four months
Integrated actions and the implementation of new technologies assist in the reduction of thefts in general in Pará
Pará recorded a 46.2% reduction in cell phone thefts between January and April 2025, compared to the same period in 2022. The data, released this Tuesday (13) by the Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup), through the Deputy Secretary of Intelligence and Criminal Analysis (Siac), reflects the results of integrated security actions and the adoption of new technologies in the fight against crime.
According to the head of Segup, Ualame Machado, the significant drop is the result of a solid strategy for preventing and confronting crime.
"The significant reduction in cell phone thefts has a direct impact on the lives of the people of Pará. The population feels safer in their daily activities. This progress is due to our commitment to public safety and the adoption of innovative technologies, such as the IMEIGuard app, which allows for quick consultations about a device during police approaches," highlighted the secretary.
Drop in numbers
In the first four months of 2025, the state recorded 6,979 cell phone thefts — 5,997 fewer cases than in the same period of 2022, which totaled 12,976 occurrences. Compared to 2024, when 8,422 cases were recorded, the drop is 17%. In comparison with 2023, the reduction reaches 30%.
Technological initiatives
Launched in 2024, the IMEIGuard app allows security agents to check in real-time whether a cell phone is stolen or not. The system works integrated with Alerta Celular Pará, a platform where citizens can register the IMEI (device identification code), linking it to the owner's CPF. The data is then cross-referenced with public security systems, facilitating the recovery of stolen cell phones.
Theft in general also shows a decline
The reduction also extends to the overall number of thefts in the state. From January to April this year, 10,614 cases were recorded — a 73% drop compared to the same period in 2018, which totaled 39,103 occurrences. This represents 28,489 fewer crimes.
Other comparisons also show a reduction:
- Compared to 2024 (12,649 records), the drop was 16%;
- Compared to 2023 (14,808), the decrease was 28.3%;
- Compared to 2022 (19,535), the drop reaches 45.6%.
Only in April 2025, 2,665 thefts were recorded — the lowest number for the month in the entire historical series. Compared to April 2024, the reduction is 14.1%. Against April 2019 (6,834 cases) and April 2018 (8,854), the drops are 61% and 70%, respectively.
Strengthening security
As Secretary Ualame highlighted, the Government of Pará has intensified investments in public safety. In 2025 alone, a service order has already been signed for the installation of new security totems at strategic points, in addition to the delivery of new vehicles and modernized police stations. Furthermore, public competitions for increasing police personnel are also underway, to enhance the presence of security forces and ensure a more agile and effective response in combating crime. “We are committed to ensuring that the people of Pará live with more safety and tranquility. These strategic actions are essential to protect citizens and their property,” concluded Ualame Machado.
